A call to ban carry on

LOL, Heaven for bid women should have an opinion.. and voice it too.

I can handle the truth and I also call it as I see it too..

PS., I never implied you hated women, you came to that conclusion all by yourself...:D

Lol you did imply that, lets not backpeddle now.

[I'll get flamed for this] but handbags (and to a lesser extent manbags) should go under the seat in front, not upstairs in a bin ;)

I don't carry a handbag (it's a satchel) so I fall into the "Yep small bags under the seat in front" but I actually dont think that is fair to women (or carriers of small bags). If I take on board a rollaboard and that goes above me I have all that free space in front of me - why shouldnt someone who has brought on board a smaller bag not have the same advantage?

Tomorrow my laptop bag will go on top of my rollaboard (actually I am carrying so little I might not take the laptop bag) in the overhead as I am in a bulk head (unless I get op'ed to a skybed ;)) - but if not (e.g. if on a 738) it always goes under the seat in front. Actually if I am not taking a rollaboard then it still goes under the seat in front.

. . . . .

I always try to do the same - place the second bag on top of the roller; annoys me no end the number of people who have to place their 2 items side by side when they could easily fit on top of each other. (Add to that the possibility of it getting damaged by someone else slinging their bag on top of the laptop - eeeek!) If space is really tight, the laptop goes under the seat in front of me. My camera bag actually does have space for it, but on some overhead bins, the bag has to lie on its back which means the laptop would take full brunt of the weight - not a nice thought at all.

Are there any DIY scales at Australian airports?
I have used them at both SYD and BNE. I think they are still around.

More seriously my hand luggage is generally 12kg for the rollaboard (laptop bag goes under the seat in front). As JohnK points out my regulation size rollaboard is one where you can fit three in a standard rollaboards - so three x 12 = 36kg - well under the rating for the overhead.
My main comment on regular size rollaboards is that whilst you can just fit 3 of them into the overhead isn't the overhead supposed to be for 6 people. So when I turn up with a full laptop bag I have to try and squeeze it under the seat which is not always possible.

Anyway it would be interesting to see the next steps the airlines take to combat the worrying trend of some people taking on board too much carry-on. I saw someone recently with 4 bags.

If weight is such an issue for airlines, maybe they should reward frequent flyers who only have carry on and no check in? A small amount of points of SC for each flight if you check nothing it...

Individual overhead lockers for each seat. If it don't fit, it don't fly.

This means you need 6 lockers per row. Think basically about 170 lockers for a standard 737. That's about 80-90 lockers per side of the plane. I think that's near impossible.

It would make it a lot easier not to hijack someone's entitled space, though. Until pax work out how to bully other pax into giving up their locker.

EDIT: You need 6 lockers per *row*, not per pax....

I'd be willing to fly with no carry on and Auction off my overhead space on boarding. :) For the right price we can discuss the underseat space too.

For me, the right price would need to be enough to buy an upgrade. I never use my underseat space anymore as I like to stretch my legs out. At 6"2 leg space is pretty important.

I realise it would be extremely impractical as the lockers would be very small, but it would solve the space problem. It was also quite tongue in cheek. :)
