Naturally this doesn't really affect me, as a WP each of my pieces must always be 32 kg or less anyway due to OHS, and now I can have 3 of them rather than the previous allowance of only 2. (What the hell do you do with 96 kg??? Except for moving house...)


This change just seems to cut the cheese on allowances to restrict it by pieces rather than an arbitrary number of pieces even at the same weight. It really isn't a synergy with NGCI (because NGCI can't handle Dom->Int itinerary check ins anyway).


Naturally I see the major sources of complaints to come from those who must endure a piece weight of only 23 kg even if their collective allowance is more than 23 kg.

Gotta feel sorry for SGs: travel in Y = 2 x 32 kg pieces, but travel in Y+ = 3 x 23 kg pieces. The latter is an improvement in 5 kg nett but must be split across 3 pieces with a reduction in unit piece weight. Mentally annoying at best. Either give them 3 x 32 kg, or 2 x 32 + 1 x 23, or a choice of 3 x 23 or 2 x 32 at check-in.

96Kg would mean that if travelling whilst diving I would take my own weights and tanks... Although I am not sure I would actually want to do that.

My last experience travelling with the family (2 in J and one in lap) was the example I cite frequently on the piece issue - it was easier to travel with lots of small bags than a small number of large bags. However on that trip we would have been entitled (under this policy) to six bags and 194 kgs. We actually travelled with maybe six/seven bags + large stroller bag at weighed in at 84KGs - which was 4Kg over the limits for us (if you include the stroller which the policy in the past wasn't whether the stroller didnt count if on board of if checked).

This is a genuine improvement since then.

Shortie, vest, hood, 3mil, 5mil or maybe even my 8mil instead of the 5 - who knows? Brilliant.
Dive gear alone usually sits around 20kg w regs and a suit, not including the housings.

Just got an email after I'd read the AusBT story regarding new international baggage limits on Qantas... Looks like this 'enhancement' might actually be a good one, although you are now tightly restricted with the number of bags you can check in.

As per the AusBT article...

Agreed, this will be a *big* improvement for the trips my wife takes back home - and I can assure you she can easily fill 3x32kg bags with no worries at all (and no doubt 2 of my 3x32kg allowances too I'm sure ).

OK I'll bite - the only thing I don't understand why are QF (and others) becoming so obsessed with the piece system rather than weight limits? With LCCs (well Jetstar anyway) you buy a luggage allowance (or have it included with some higher fares) and that is your allowance. With full service carriers (well QF anyway) its all getting very complicated. I guess it is so that in the vast majority of cases people will still only take a smaller weight, but you can accommodate those with heavier suitcases.

Personally, I just have found in coming back from MEL to SIN I often have 3 bags (supplies!) ... 18kg + 15kg + 7kg (cooler bag for meat/cheese) to make the process simpler and easier to manage, but have not got anywhere near 64kg. Just means now I would have to fork out $90 or buy a new bigger suitcase that I fill with 32kg (not likely) . Or go on SQ or EK or JQ (likely).

Paddy we bought new bags with those multi directional wheels so I can handle 4 bags pretty easily by myself. I just raise the handles and put them back to back and they roll with a feather like touch. We got these Samsonite bags at the local Costco in Los Angeles.
if Costco don't have them you could get equivalents at an outlet mall.
