Sydney rated worst airport in Australia [for service]

I really don't have a problem with SYD. Decent lounges, kerb to F lounge in 10 mins earlier in the week. Try Broken hill or Dubbo if you want a different airport experience...

And those of us who travel through SYD regularly have never been to any other airport in Australia.

I have never participated in this survey they conducted. The results are meaningless....

Actually they are not meaningless - the report is part of the requirement of the ACCC to monitor the performance of airports, and takes into account what passengers think, what airlines think, and what border authorities think about the aiprort performance.

Passengers rated Sydney worst, Airlines rated Perth worst. Overall, the margin between Perth and Sydney was quite small. Perth was 3.68, just pipping out Sydney at 3.66.

It is meaningless when a person who goes through SYD almost twice a week and has visited most airports around Australia for both domestic and international flight has never been surveyed yet the survey contains feedback from the once in 3 year traveller who takes wife and kids travelling on JQ to Fiji or Bali.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have SYD as my primary airport as I do not know what I would have done had I been commuting ADL-PER or worse still DRW-HBA....

I think "third-world" every time I transfer through Sydney from Melbourne onto an international flight. Last time I flew into the international terminal on Jet* for a transfer to Hawaii and the security line was almost 25 minutes long while a security officer with an obsessive-compulsive disorder made a young family unpack every item of hand luggage while the other officer handled the 20+Qantas crew members who needed to go to the front of the line. Returning from the same trip, took almost 2 hours from landing to getting to the gate for my flight back to Melbourne. I don't recall worse experience anywhere in the actual third world.

I would suspect that many such survey results that a person disagrees with would be considered meaningless by that person ...

... I plagiarise Douglas Adams and call it the "Zaphod Breeblebox" syndrome.

Everyone has their own personal likes and dislikes.

For example I despise the shopping arcades one is forced to navigate after emigration in both MEL & SYD - at least the First lounge is generally waiting for me at the end.

Such statements remind me of how priveleged most people are, if waiting rates as one of their worst experiences. I wish my life was that sweet. Which brings me to my point, its all subjective and may in fact have nothing to do with your personal preferences. I bought an appliance recently based partly on reviews and discovered post purchase that while the appliance was good it wasn't the be all and end all item others made it out to be. I have no idea on what criteria it received those amazing reviews. Its anything but amazing. Better than average is how I would rate it.

Of course it's subjective but, based on my factual experience, no more or less valid than someone whose positive view is based on their own, one person, factual experience. And what's "privileged" about making a judgment comparing Sydney to other airports, first or third word, that can get me from point A to point B faster?

I don't disagree with your post but I have an issue with "surveys" or "polls" claiming this or that regardless of whether I agree with the result or not.

- This survey is stupid and extremely subjective and has nothing to do with "reality". Even worse when the results are something like SYD 16.7%, BNE 15.4%, MEL 14.7% etc. It is totally meaningless.
- There was a recent "poll" about Etihad or Emirates the best airline in the world. Yeah right. Who voted?

You don't like walking through duty free? I don't mind and just block it all out. Let's not get into transport options, choice of airlines, schedules, lounges, bars etc.

I know it is all personal preference but SYD is not the worst airport. Not even close to the worst. But hey why ruin a good article....

The report was restricted basically to Australian capital city airports. So, it comes out with the lowest Quality of Service score across that group. Keep in mind, it was not just about what passengers thought.

Who indicated the article was good?

The survey was in relation to airport "Quality of Service" - nothing to do with much of what has been posted here - certainly there's nothing in the article about SYD being the "Worst Airport".

In fact the title of this thread is misleading - I have adjusted it.

I suppose those scores are a symptom of not having a 2nd airport in the Sydney basin for competition to take place. There is no pressure for things to change.
BNE is the same. It would be fantastic to have a 2nd airport in both of these cities to get some efficiencies.
Rant over.
