G'day Guys,

First time poster, long time reader.. and all that.

Hoping you can help me.

My SC's reset at the end of the month, and I'm going to fall short of Platinum by around 150 SC's. Unfortunately, I would have easily made this (with PER-AKL and PER-ADL flights) had I not had sinus surgery yesterday. I'm now grounded for 2-4 weeks.

Next month (14th) I'll be flying PER-SYD-DFW-MCO and returning a week later.

A number of my friends have managed to have some concessions made to their SC reset period, but the FF staff seem to be reluctant to help me out.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this? I'm a little frustrated at the timing of my surgery, but unfortunately there is not much I can do about it now. I would have easily made Platinum this period had I not had it. Had I missed out because I couldn't make enough flights, I wouldn't have an issue.

I'm fairly close to Virgin Platinum (thanks status match!), so could fly with virgin to LAX, but would prefer to stick with Qantas as my business carrier.

I guess, I'm a little frustrated at the lack of flexibility/customer service.

They are generally fairly hard on this. Is this a requal or new qual? They might let it slide based on a requal especially if you have upcoming confirmed bookings. I know they have parked status for a year for pregnancy...

Maybe try and call them again and explain about the surgery, but I don't hold out much hope - I have been told by QF that the QF Stauts Credit reset mechanism is set in stone and cannot be varied. I suspect if you allude to the fact that you may be choosing between QF and VA in the near future then they will say something along the lines of "sorry we can't help you about the SC reset but we hope that you choose QF for your future travel".

I doubt you will get the period changed, it only happens when PG comes into play, if its a requal, you may find if your average yearly travel works about to be above the requal, then some concessions are made.

I have not heard of anyone achieving what you are wanting.

If it is requl they can move the boundary but if it is a achieving they will not allow it.

I've never heard anyone having their SC year extended or changed unless it was for PG status..

Sorry but I don't believe your friends were able to do that.

Thanks for the feedback guys. With my mates, it may have been requal rather than moving to the next tier.. I'll try again, but otherwise I'll just have to wait for next year :)

Why not do a couple of extra flights in the US? Shouldn't take too much time.
or, if your booking is Y, buy up to PE.

you should do a short SC run in the US, then you would return at least as gold, with all the lounge privileges etc. This may mean that you can turn platinum early in the upcoming qualifying year.

As for bending the rules and extending you SC earning period a couple of weeks, don't think that this will happen, nothing against your situation, but how long is a piece of string, do it for you, and then it opens the floodgates for others, perhaps with less compelling reasons.

Domestic First on AA should do the trick from what I've heard on this forum.

Have just finished a couple of SC runs in the US.

I can see a few distinct possibilities for this trip by adding perhaps a day and a half extra flying building SCs for less than $2 a SC. There is no reason why this poster can not return as a Gold, with all the lounge access etc.

Just need a little information from the OP.
Type of fare, full or discount Y, as it may be better to go DFW to the start of the SC run and then to MCO.
Also approximate dates. Also I guess that your departure date and return date may be set in stone for work reasons and do you have to be in MCO on particular days that you can not vary.
Also are you renting a car while there, if you are, then there are possibilities with airports near to MCO rather than MCO.

Awaiting input from the OP

My impression from the OP was that finding qualifying flights was not the issue - the challenge was that he is not able t o fly again before his current status year ends. Suggestions about heading over to the US are probably not particularly helpful for the current status year, although may help him next year.

yes, this is the objective of a US SC run, the OP can not be helped this year, but with the help of a SC run in the US, he may gain platinum early in the next qualifying year, at a fraction of the cost, if he was flying J or Y in AUS to try to achieve platinum status.

Correct, it is not doing anything to help his current situation, rather thinking ahead to his upcoming new qualifying period, also giving him QP rights on return, without having to pay to join the QP (if he flies Y in AUS).

Thanks guys, not sure I'm going to have time to do an SC run whilst I'm over there, though I'll keep it in mind.

I've got to 150 points short of platinum with mostly domestic fares so far, next year will be flying more internationally, so expect to reach platinum fairly quickly.

ps. Do you think it'd be worth going PER-SYD-LAX-MCO or PER-SYD-DFW-MCO?

Having spent only a small amount of time in the states, the A380 + visiting LA certainly has its appeal.

I would go PER-SYD-LAX-MCO and have a short look around LA. The flight LAX-MCO may well have a stop over in DFW, if you can you may be able to score a few hours in DFW, not sure if you would have long enough to have a look at Dallas though.
