Just looking at booking the family on a JASA MEL/LAX nearly a year out. I know you can't book a stopover when the booking is more than six-months out, but if I book a Melbourne to LA flight with a two-day layover in Singapore, can we get our bags in Singapore when we get off the Melbourne flight and recheck in for the connecting flight two days later? Or are our bags held at the airport "in-transit" for the connecting flight. If they are kept in security, I guess we could go shopping in Singapore and buy new clothes. I'm just worried about waiting until six months out from the flight and finding no availability.

With questions like this you should call the Kris flyer 02 number as they are most helpful.
They may have visibility or knowledge of plane schedule changes where you could maybe do a 3 hour stop over in Changi get showered and changed by using the J lounge. The only thing missing is deodorant in the lounge showers and they are kept immaculate.

Yep I'll give them a call. I'm looking to do at a 24hour stopover to break the flight and show the kids a bit of Singapore. Cheers, Peter

Seems like a long way to get from MEL to LAX ;) but just out of curiosity, how many KF miles are they charging for this route (given 24h 20m layover) is really a SIN stopover, rather than a transit. Depending on the answer, I might have to explore this route in the future and visit my sis in SIN enroute to the USA.

I think it's around 340K points for four one-way J tix. I'm looking for options that I can take my teenage boys with us on a business trip. Don't want a Risky Business situation  when I get back. Plus the flight time between SING and LAX is much the same as MEL-LAX, and we can do a couple of days showing them a bit of Singapore.

I also strongly suggest you call KF and clarify this - I am sure in past I have on a number of occasions booked MEL-SIN-LAX months ahead maybe up to 300+days with several days stopover in SIN both on outboound AND inbound - never heard this 6mth bit before - but call and clarify yourself.

Since introduction of 380 and 77W MEL-SIN-LAX Savers were restricted to MEL-SIN-NRT-LAX and return - then they replaced 747 0n NRT run last year with 380 which stopped that - but i did that run many times - loved it - would love to have been able to measure just how much CH or Bolly I consumed on those flts.

Apparently on a Saver you can't book a stop-over over six months out. You can on a Standard.

You are allowed one stopover on a Saver return, none on a o/w.
On a Standard you are allowed a stopover both o/w and return.
Savers have a six month validity, Standards have 12 months.

Where is the JASA? :p

You can definitely get your bags out. I've done it with less than 24 hours in SIN. And it was KUL-SIN-LAX too.

I think all this commentary is ignoring somewhat the fact that the OP received this as a valid option when trying to book on SQ website (and I have verified myself though haven't taken it all the way to booking). In my experience if you can book it via their website SQ will honour it, regardless of whether it is theoretically valid.

And yes you can get your bags out in my experience.

For the bags questions: To access your bags in SIN you will checkin only for the first sector. Your BP & bags will get you from MEL - SIN and your bags will be waiting on the carousel by the time you get there.

When you come back in 21 hours, you checkin for the next sector.

I have been looking to leverage some of these types of flight pairs to get a 'free' Singapore stopover on other journeys from Europe but I end up just wanting to take the quickest journey home.

Have a great trip.

I have on Saver coming back from Europe. Booked at the maximum time out.

I have also booked a stopover for my daughter en-route to Cairo on Saver J well over 6 months out.

They may have changed the rule, but it has not applied previoulsy booking online.

Glad to read that - I thought I was going bonkers - I know I have booked SSO up to 350 days out - I did it 3 or 4 years in succesion as I always need to get to a trade show in LAS late Sept - did the MEL-SIN-NRT-LAS milk run a number of times - stopover saw me head to China / Phils for a few days each year - I had no idea it had changed.

To those travelers that have gotten their bags at Singapore, was that as a on a return or oneway j saver?

Are you technically allowed onto land side with a oneway non-stopover ticket? I'm also Considering breaking a journey on a oneway j saver but can I get out of the airport or will I be stuck shopping in the terminal?

Not a problem IME - have gone downtown a number of times if I have 5 to 8hr layover between flts - you just need your PP and BP to get back through immig.

Singapore is a very easy country to enter and exit. For entry into the country they have never enquired as to the status of my ticket.

To get back into the airport you need your passport and a boarding pass. So when leaving you will need to check in at the airport to obtain your boarding pass prior to clearing immigration (as normal.)

One thought: When I have gone into Singapore for one night stopovers I have planned just to take my carry-on and leave my checked bags with the airline. For instance, on your original itinerary you could check everything through to your destination, obtain both boarding passes in Melbourne. Dress and pack you carry-on for your Singapore stopover. When you arrive in Singapore, just go through immigration with your carry-on and head to your hotel. Your checked bags will meet you on your flight. Remember, for your J redemption you each have two pieces of carry-on. Another thing I like about this is it easier on the ground in Singapore as not as much to 'repack' when leaving.

Nice one! That's sounds like the go. Thanks for that.
