Chip or pin on american express cards?

Tempted to call to ask but not that keen to get a new card number

No, it's actually BMW the car. The elitists actually have a hidden thread where they plot against the pleb members.

:D Hehe. So how many postings to get to Elitist or Elite level on here? 5,000?

Anyhow thanks to other post with link to abbreviations page. But there is no entry for BMW, so there must also be an elitist version of the glossary. Anyhow why the long link and in a thread rather than just simply AustralianFrequentFlyer.com.au/glossary or after community/ 185 pages in that thread?! Is AFF kidding. Haven't they heard of a wiki?

Just searched for 'BMW' in Keyword of Advanced Search - The Australian Frequent Flyer Online Community and nothin'.

Did it with main search and found the Thread about the Gold card with 10k points sign up bonus and nil annual fee. Cool.

Anyhow as for the Thread topic question: I'm old school, and I'm a Gen Y or X, whichever it is (don't care). Get a Fisher Space pen or any other mini slim pen to carry and sign with that. I've started doing that after realising how much germs must be on those pens shared around. Especially with credit cards being used by travellers and all sort of bugs coming into Oz or any place from overseas that have more diseases and lower sanitation standards.

But if pushed, it's gotta be PIN. More secure and most accept PIN, as they would with EFTPOS anyways.

Just got a my replacement Plat Reserve in the mail (lost card last month) complete with chip.

Incidentally, I wonder if they are going to put chips in Centurion cards seeing they are hand-crafted from Titanium? They have a 5 year expiry too, so anyone with one could be waiting a while to find out!

I just swapped my recently received Rewards Maximiser (no chip) received late last year for one with a pin and chip. Only the last 4 numbers and the CSV changed and it was relatively easy to update all of my direct debits. There's a 60 day grace period if you forget any.

Hopefully the new card will avoid any problems in Europe and the US.

They do in the uk and i believe parts of asia too. Not something amex havent already done in other markets.

I tried using my chip Plat Edge card at 7-eleven after filling up my car with petrol. My card has the tap and go feature, so did the merchant's pad (ANZ Bank badged), so I gave that a go. Didn't work - showed as invalid. I then inserted my chip card. Didn't work - showed as invalid. I had to then fall back on swiping my card instead. Tap and go and the chip worked elsewhere.

Used mine at Dan Murphy's yesterday - still required me to sign

FYI Centurion cards will be shipped in batches from the end of February. My partner and I are on the list for the first batch - you can be put on the list to be the first to get them.

Thanks Hayden - I assume though they will change the last 4 digits of the card number though? Or are they making an exception here? (Incidentally, how do you cut up a titanium card when issued a new one? I asked Amex that once when the additional card was issued with the name incorrectly listed and they couldn't answer!!)

, he said no and inserted into the reader anyway, I subsequently entered the incorrect pin and he refused to swipe and let me sign

Shouldn't you be able to just hit enter and it prints a receipt to sign?

I have a PIN on my Amex, but WW Caltex still makes you sign, so whether or not you enter the pin or just hit enter, you still have to sign.

Tin snips or an angle grinder??

I believe you need to send it back to them (well - a contractor out West that destroys the card).

Bored one day getting rid of two old cent cards I found the angle grinder was a nightmare as the card doesn't sit in a vice very well.

Best I got was heating it up on the webber and smacking it with a hammer. That basically bent it out of shape.

Didn't know u could send to them as when I asked they suggested I could keep it in my draw as a record of my old number if I needed it! Not sure that's the right thing for Amex to say but hey ho.

Re chip and pin. Call me old school but I like signing. Particularly in restaurants as I find the whole mobile epos machine and waiter hanging around whilst you tap buttons a little annoying. Much prefer to sign in my own time.

Anyway it's inevitable now...

I've heard that some people are having issues with getting their pin "burnt" to their card. (The card needs to be inserted into a properly configured chip reader for Amex to be able to burn the pin number you selected online to the card apparently).

There's a warning in the collateral with the card which says that until this happens, you will be asked to sign.

Anyone experienced this?

What constitutes a "properly configured" chip reader?

Not only this, but :

Can I change my PIN?
Unfortunately, you can't change the PIN you nominate for your American Express Card once it has been set.

Seems like American Express Australia is just implementing some half baked solution.

We pay so much annual fee and we get half baked products? I've never been so disappointed with American Express until now.

In the UK, you just insert your American Express card into ATM to change PIN.

In all fairness, in the UK that is standard for any card. IIRC in Australia even for your usual bank card you can only do it either at the bank, over the phone or via THEIR ATM only. In the UK pretty much any card can have it's pin changed at any Link ATM.

Talk about poor security.
Most FIs recommend you change your pin every 6 months (of course most including moi don't)

Exactly, you have to use the ATM which belongs to your bank.

So, why can't AmEx do PIN change on the Internet, just like HSBC or Citi?

Visa is enforcing chip & PIN from next year, no more signature, so the banks and MasterCard will probably do the same. And AmEX? You cannot change PIN, and you cannot have chip unless you effectively report your card as lost (since they have to generate a new card number). Meaning I have to wait until 2014 for one card, another 2015.

Unlike some people here, I actually have been paying my $395 annual fee to AmEx every year, because I think it's worth it. I never asked for discount; but this is the very first time when I don't think they deserve my annual fee.
