Chip or pin on american express cards?

Does anyone know if the contactless payment logo ")))))" at the back of the card is just a generic logo for this feature or is it unique to Amex's contactless payment system? I often see this on the merchant's device but I soon found out that it may not necessarily mean that it works on Amex card. I still have to insert or swipe.

I believe the logo is a generic one for contactless payments. However, not all devices will accept Amex cards as the software won't have been updated for them. I have only seen one device that had an Amex logo on it, but it was not accepting contactless payments. Not sure why - whether it was not enabled, or some other issue.

Agree - it is the same logo as the one for Visa PayWave. I think I read somewhere that Amex has licensed the technology from them - not sure if that is true however.

I'm yet to find a merchant terminal that has been activated for Amex contactless, I suspect that it will take quite a while for the software to be updated...

I've heard that some people are having issues with getting their pin "burnt" to their card. (The card needs to be inserted into a properly configured chip reader for Amex to be able to burn the pin number you selected online to the card apparently).

There's a warning in the collateral with the card which says that until this happens, you will be asked to sign.

Anyone experienced this?

After a bit of a performance I received my chip and pin Plat Amex charge card yesterday. I was told that in order to make sure it worked on my overseas jaunts I needed to use it "two or three" times in Australia.

BP - Recognised the card but required signature
JB Hi Fi - Didn't recognise Chip had to swipe card
Coles - Recognised card and accepted PIN. :)

7-eleven petrol station - Swiped card but system asks to insert, inserted card but system unable to read chip and asks to swipe, swiped card again and accepted PIN.

Managed to swipe my amex at coles with one of their new paypass machines. First successful rfid payment on my amex ever.

Had a painful experience this morning.
Saw paypass machine. Tapped Amex. Rejected. Inserted chip into reader. Rejected. Had to then swipe which was accepted.

Cashier was just looking at me strangely.

Wish merchants would sort it out.

What sort of merchant was this? Are we talking a major, like Coles, IGA, BP, Officeworks? Or a small place, like a local cafe, corner store etc?

Yeah, Subways are a bit funny. I think cause they're a franchise it's up to each individual outlet to organise its own payment options. Hence there's no consistency. Some accept AMEX, some don't. Some are cash only!

What works depends on the flavour and vintage of terminal - some I have to swipe & PIN, others insert & PIN. Some swipe/insert/swipe and then PIN. Not had to sign since getting my Chip & Pin and setting it up online. 'Activated the burn' at Woolies self-service checkout.

Thought I was special, routine replacement base level Qantas Amex replacement card waiting for me today, with chip. Reading here it seems not :(

Just ordered chip Plat Charge and Plat Credit.
Useful Amex rep said since end of March, all the cards in the Amex Australia stable are being issued with chip and contactless.

Also noted that you need to use with chip to start with in Australia to burn the pin (said up to five times) before using contactless or overseas.

Good to know. I've diverted my new cards to be delivered to Australia now as they're useless to me here (UK) with the chip not functioning. Will have to get someone to use them 5x for me, then bring them over:!:

If you use the "wrong" terminals, you could never have your pin "burnt". Pfft about the contactless too - I think that should work as soon as the card arrives (assuming you find a terminal that supports it). Woolies seem to be good at burning pins, some Coles registers too.

My experience with Amex Chip and Pin/Contactless

Bunnings, Caltex, Kinokuniya - Chip not accepted
KMart - Despite NOT showing an amex contactless logo this is the only place where Contactless has worked for me

I tried using the contactless at mcdonalds, it recognises the card when I tap it but is unable to process the transaction and I have to insert it.

Received a new Qantas Ultimate card today after my last one was cancelled due to fraud.

It has a chip, contactless symbol and I had to select a PIN when activating it. Almost doesn't feel like an AMEX anymore :)

Don't worry it soon will again. you'll soon be facing the joys of inconsistent acceptance of chip and pin! (That said it seems to be getting better!)
