Chip or pin on american express cards?

Now. I have just received my Edge with a Chip in it. You choose your own PIN.

In the letter it stated that my other Amex cards would also gain Chips.

Was this a brand new application? Or have they sent you out a chip card to replace your existing one without any prompting?

New application..is my first Edge. Apart from grabbing the points and flight for $99 it is my back up plan to warehouse points if I can't negotiate on the Charge Card as it is due soon.

After reading this thread and checking out the details on their website I called up to see if either of my cards are able to be issued with chips...

I was told that my Plat Charge is not eligible yet (likely around Feb next year) however my Reserve card was so they reissued it and I'm expecting it to arrive tomorrow. They are happy to reissue the plastic to you with a chip etc, however you will get a new card number as it is treated as a reissue unlike when your card expires and you just get a new exp date.

Can't wait for my Charge to get a chip so I can speed through the supermarket (where I'm spending over $35 or whatever).

Thanks greenfrog for calling on our behalf :) also looking forward to chip and pin here.

This is probably mi biggest grip with these new systems. I've even been to stores where it says no sig/pin under $30 for Amex/MC/Visa yet the system still stops and I have to wait for staff member to check. Highly irritating.. don't get me started on the fact that no checkouts seem to ever be open

I now have my new Reserve card with both a chip and contactless payments... Now I just need to remember to use the contactless feature!!

Re your comment hummel, I've never had any trouble with Woolworths, Liquerland, Vintage Cellars that all allow payments under $30/$35 with any of my cards.

I love this as it means I can swipe my Plat charge and be on my way, whereas I used to use my Visa card with a chip just so I didn't have to sign on those stupid digital board things that never seem to work properly.

Now for them to bring in all the great features from the US - no forex fees, their ipad app, lower annual fee etc etc

Hmm I can't find a 'flying pig' emoticon for my post...

I've had no problem swiping with my plat charge at stores (e.g. Coles) that allows you to swipe without PIN or signature for small amounts.

My chip card has come as well. I can't wait to get home to use it since I'm currently interstate. What has the world come to when the thing I'm looking forward to most is returning home to a chip+PIN card? haha

Just received my reserve with chip & pin, Ive never seen an AMEX sign on those contact-less machines so wondering if it will even work on those...?
I don't want a chip on my Platinum charge tho, i recon it will look ugly!

That's strange - what happens if the card has become unreadable due to wear & tear - I believe you just call AMEX and they send you a replacement card, but wouldn't it have the same number? Anybody tried this?

I understand the need to change card number if the card was lost or stolen, not quite sure why they would need to change card number otherwise... I'd like to also swap my Reserve card fro a pin version but I don't want to change all links to automatic debit

All card re-issue (Except renewal based on expiry date) will get a new generated number & a new expiry date.

My charge card has only just been renewed valid to 2015, however no chip or pin. Getting a replacement with a new number would involve an unknown number of changes to automatic billing.

Bugger!

Yes, have had a new number three times in the last 2 years: card stolen, replacement didn't arrive, strip got wrecked (in a PNG reader). Each time I got a new number.

Have had a Pin for overseas cash advances from machines for years. Now here's the interesting bit. Mrs Pineapple rang for a new card a in October (after fraudulent trans from a New Delhi petrol station:shock:) and was told sorry no pins yet. And yet I have been using the pin they gave me on purchases for some months and it works fine on all but large value transactions.

Card is Qantas AMEX Ultimate

Cheers skip

My stock standard gold credit card (that I rarely use!) somehow got damaged and I requested a replacement. Chipped replacement will be sent. You can set the PIN through online banking.

Tempted to get my "real" Amex card replaced too, but I only had it renewed in Oct last year so don't want to sort out DD changes again.

However, will get it swapped if I'm planning any extended trips overseas, or if fraud occurs etc.

New supplementary platinum charge card arrived this week with no chip.

Yup, like simongr, new replacement Platinum Charge Card arrived, but with no chip. Was a little disappointed.

Marginally OT. I have been using my Amex around Europe for the past 5 months, often a couple of times a day. When I can find someone who will take it that is. :( I can say categorically that I have not had my signature looked at once in that time. After they try to "chip" the card and realise it doesn't have one, they hand over the pen and never look. I could sign Donald Duck for all it matters.

My wife used one of my cards for about 18 months ( in Australia ) and not once was her signature queried which is NOTHING like mine! And the sales person in the majority of cases wood hold the card next to the receipt to check ! ..........I was and remain dumbfounded

SWMBO has provided me with a card I am to use when OS. It is the 28 degrees master card , I am told there are no forex fees etc. so if your flying pig arrives I will be back to Amex plat charge card again.

Interesting about those Charge cards being replaced without chip. I spoke with Amex a few months ago and they said they're currently rolling them out across all, I asked if this covered my card (plat edge) and was told yes. So I would have thought the Plat charge being a higher card would have recieved the chip by now.

I'm heading to Europe this year and was hoping to have a chip card by then, perhaps i'll just lose it.
