The timing sounds strange, I wonder what other circumstances there were.

Considering they were passing Goulburn (close to halfway), I also wonder what factors would take place in deciding whether to continue or to turn back - having said that, turning back to CBR would result in passing over less populated land.

Looks like it was late leaving CBR, it didn't leave until a bit after 10am.

  • Actual Gate Departure Changed To 02/03/12 10:02 AM
  • Actual Runway Departure Changed To 02/03/12 10:07 AM
  • Estimated Gate Arrival Changed From 02/03/12 10:55 AM To 02/03/12 10:47 AM
  • Status Changed From Scheduled To Active

Good to read that it didn’t affect the plane too much and a "textbook" landing was made. I’m on two Dash 8-300’s tomorrow :p

I'm disappointed in the SMH story-where is the 'I thought we were all going to die' quote from 'Terrified passenger'.;);)
Sounds like the crew handled it professionally and efficiently-no big deal although watching a prop stop spinning
on a two engine turboprop wouldn't exactly be thrilling:!:
Cheers

Goulburn is exactly half way between Canberra and Mittagong so still a bit further to SYD.

The aircraft track Cullerin, Bindook then into Sydney, Gouburn is at 30% of that tracks distance.

My comment was from recollection of when we flew Canberra-Mittagong-Richmond by Huey. Abeam Goulburn was exactly half of the Canberra-Mittagong leg. Used to great advantage one time when instructing the CDF on the Iroquois. A bit hard to relay here but a good story if someone asks me sometime.

I hope you did not loose an engine?

Any way of knowing which Dash 8 was involved in the incident?

Well my Dash8 tomorrow is safely on the ground in DPO tonight.
I liked the Yahoo news picture-made it look like it was going straight into the ground.with the Brighton hotel on Botany bay in the background I guess it was not of the actual incident.

At least no one was injured and all returned safely.

.....and the fact that the photo used was just a file shot of a B737 not the tail of a Dash8 which is pretty unmistakeable.

I know. You should have seen Skum Sky News lose the plot over it. They were calling it a 'Jetstar propeller plane' until some smart cookie fixed the autocue.

Given the general level of service which pax receive on QF these days, Sky News shouldn't be taking all the blame this time (even though, technically speaking, QF wasn't the operating carrier for the flight).
