I prepaid most of my accommodation as well but unfortunately for me golf, drink, food is by far the major cost as I am planning on playing ~9 games of golf and staying there for 2 weeks.

Anyway no big deal and with my luck I should expect this sort of thing can happen. A couple of years ago the AUD = 23-24 THB towards the end of the trip.

On Oct 4, the AUD was USD 0.9446
Today, Oct 27, just over 3 weeks later, it is USD 1.0535 which is a gain of an incredible 11.5%!!

who could have predicted this??

Edit: Actually on Sep 23rd, Mal posted this:

No.

My current punt is that the dollar will fall to early 90's, then languish there for about a month or two before staging another rally back past par and up to $1.10.

Time will tell....

Well done Mal, do you have a business in the financial sector?

See what happens on Tuesday with the reserve bank and "Interest Rates".

If rates stay the same (or go up) then $1.10 will not be far away ... if they are reduced then back to $1 ...

.. I have a US$800 purchase to make soon - when should I commit? decisions ... decisions ...

Me? On Oct 4, which was 4 days into my 2 week holiday, and for the majority of my holiday the AUD was down. I am now back from holidays. Enough said.

Oh, and I will be on holidays again from Jan 13 - Jan 28 2012....

Thanks for the warning John;)! Now AUD is USD1.0616....maybe I should change some cash AUD--->USD for a rainy day!!

Maybe I should buy some PC pts??

Perfect I am away just after you so the AUD will be around $1.10 for me by then again !

Yes we need to buy the highs and sell the lows.
It is a good time to go overseas this week.

The best I have seen at the exchanges this week is ~USD1.01. Any chance of seeing ~USD1.05 at the exchanges anytime soon? It would be a good time to hedge.

I ended up doing the points + cash for a January stay and purchased 50,000 PC points. Will be interesting to see what is charged to the Amex for USD300.

And just in case you are planning your next trip I will be going overseas end April 2012. :)

If it were me it would be a simple answer-commit now and the dollar goes up,wait and watch it plummet.:(

My last USD transaction (which was not PC for clarity), did not actually get charged to my card for about 2 weeks after the transaction. Somehow, as if by magic it matched the day that the AUD was at its low point

I just purchased 100K PC pts for USD600 and the current xe.com exchange rate is 1.066. Interesting to see what exchange rate shows up on my 28 degrees MC. Anyway, 100K PC pts is equal to 4 nights at the Crowne Plaza at ~AUD 140 / night, which is great value in my books. The bext flexible rate at the CP Terrigal, which is by the beach 1.25 hours from where I live, is more than $280 / night in January (school holiday period)!!

Was that via 2 accounts? The maximum seems to be 50k.
