In the Courier Mail this morning.
Brisbane Airport plans to slug drivers for parking to pick up passengers | Courier Mail
From next April or May, a new public pick-up area, protected by boom gates, will be created to allow people to wait for passengers for free for a given period.

If they stay beyond the free period, they will be charged a yet-to-be-determined fee.

Parking has become a huge revenue raiser for the Brisbane Airport Corporation, generating almost $81 million last year.
Catching isn't it.

I was only dropping someone off last Saturday and said that would probably be their next revenue raising move.

Unfortunately given the situation they themselves have created this is actually necessary to control the flow as its out of control at the moment, Saturday morning was ridiculous.

Of course if they didn't have some of the most expensive airport parking in the country then people wouldn't be so reluctant to park and would negate the need to do this.

The price of parking at BNE is just crazy and i'm sure it'll only get worse once they finish and need to pay for their new carparking facility.

It will probably end up being 10 or 20 mins free. With punitive charges for exceeding it. Love privatised airports.

On the road leading up to BNE domestic you quite often see cars parked there with people waiting in the cars. I always assumed these people are there waiting for a call from someone arriving then they will drive to the airport and pick the arriving passengers up. I wouldn't be surprised if that stretch of road becomes no parking/stopping after this new pickup area opens.

It already is, there is a yellow line along it, pity most dont know what it means!

Hey what are you talking about, I know what it means, I just choose to ignore it because they don't police it!:mrgreen:

LOL, I just laugh when I see the folks, why park there where its dangerous when the Kingsford Smith memorial or aircraft obs area at least gives you something to look at (when the obs area is open, otherwise I borrow TNTs car park).

True, wont argue with you there...where's the KS Memorial car park entry? I cant seem to see it these days? (Or am I blind?)

Airport Drive (towards the Airport) side, inbound only (i.e. road side opposite International). I don't think you can get in from Nancy Bird Way or the roundabout these days.

$18.90 Airtrain from Domestic-Ascot. Cheaper by taxi; too funny.

I'd be guessing 10 mins is about all they will give.

The same thing happens at MEL. At Tulla, there are people always parked on the freeway leading into the terminal. It is very dangerous pulling out into traffic and there was as crackdown but it still happens there.

They could easily solve the problem with the 'cell phone waiting lot' thing they have like at LAX at other US airports, and have kerbside areas to allow to drop off and pick up, instead of having taxis dominating most of the kerb space.

But that would cost them revenue.

HOWEVER, Airtrain this morning are thinking about staying up to 10pm!!!!
Fingers crossed they give this some serious thought. It is a real pain to arrive at 8pm and find you have missed the last train by minutes. Makes the trip home to the coast more difficult.
