I don't think I would want a big celebration like that.... too over the top

I mean, me being compared to Ryan Bingham in English Studies on Monday was bad enough

Thats right, we are actually studying Up In The Air

Man this makes me sick... ;)

i'm actively trying to find a new job to reduce flying... ><

Tom Stuker breaks world F/F record

UA's high earning F/F, Tom Stuker, has broken the magic 10 million F/F mile mark flying LAX to ORD on July 9th. Stuker has logged 5962 UA flights since 1982 including 200 round trips to Australia.

Oh what I could do with that many points.;)

Cheers Dee

according to the news article he redeemed an appearance on sienfield lol wonder what else can you redeem for

There is no way I will fly that much, even with the opportunity. For me I value family more than flights .....

In English Studies? In Australia? Surely you're joking? What's that got to do with English and where is it at?! :(

Actually thats one of the main thing i remember about English studies for my HSC. I'm going back 10 years now but we studied 2 movies, 1 was Clueless (Alicia Silverstone). You'd think, stupid dumb movie, but the amount you learn about portraying ideas through film and symbolism is incredible! I loved it, i still think of that stuff when i watch movies now.

I can imagine that Up in the Air would be the same, its actually not a bad piece of film when you look at it from that perspective.

Its the little things that your subconcious picks up. Like when a change is happening in the film, autumn scenes will be shown, or when its a patriotic scene ie American, the shot will be rich in Red, Blue and white. Very rarely will there be items in scenes that don't have some meaning that works with the plot.

Fantastic stuff, made me want to go into film production when i studied it.

So i became and accountant....

Also sounds like the techniques used in subliminal-style placement advertising - of which there was plenty in Up In The Air (AA, Hilton. Hertz). And what about the particularly AFF-pertinent howler in Up In The Air - lots of coughpy MD-80s taking off that he's supposedly in but the inside shot always shows him sitting in F in a far superior aircraft. That particular symbolism is laced with inaccuracy to those that know - so what else was inaccurate? :(.

Not sure that it was that subliminal.

No, definitely not in that movie. Using that as an extreme example trying to make the point about being sceptical when using highly commercial media like a Hollywood movie in the teaching of English.

Definately product placement was huge in that movie, but moving a bit beyond that..

I guess the best way i can explain why they use hollywood movies as teaching aids is because you actually learn a fair bit about expression. Humans tend to think better in pictures than in words (obviously some people more than others). The study of film correlated with expression of ideas. It broadened horizons on how to express yourself better if you were feeling limited.

Sounds a bit daft but it really was awesome

Of course Clueless is actually Jane Austen. While there may only be 7 basic plots, I'm am yet to see Up in the Air as a remake if something from the Bard or a classic English author.

Then again Ryan Bingham makes a pretty good anti-hero.

We are comparing the themes in Othello with those in Up In The Air, mainly the Love, Loyalty, Adultery etc.

Ok, fair enough now that you've explained the context. Now just trying to imagine the Othello lot in F on a clapped-out MD-80 with the fabled AA catering :p.
