Hey All,

I think Jetstar might have slipped something in today, while all the other great things were going on in aviation today.

Another First for Jetstar - Making Air Travel Easy and Hassle-Free

For starters, they talk about their 100% self serve checkin system. Great I think to myself. Until I see this..

To enable Jetstar to offer even lower fares, Jetstar will unbundle the use of traditional check-in facilities. This will enable us to pass on even lower fares to customers that chose to use the new self service options.
In a similar way to the unbundling of meals, baggage and other airlines services customers still wanting to use traditional check-in counters will be charged a small fee to cover the costs associated with providing this service. To give customers time to get familiar with our new self service options this fee will not be introduced until 1 November 2011.

Just as I thought they were going upmarket, to replace the hole left by Virgin Blue. They add a new charge similar to the level of service from TT.

It dosen't bother me tbh, as on JQ I do whatever I can do avoid that huge queue.

What does everybody think?

I wonder how they are going to achieve humanless check in on international flights, example a flight like JQ35.

I think that they are waiting for some time before they charge for Person to
Person check In not so that customers can get used to it but so they have a
chance to get it right !
Last week I Gold Coasfromt to Melbourne with JQ. As I also avoid standing in line where possible I checked In on line. Accepted but no boarding pass. When I rang I was told
that my boarding pass would be sent to my phone and being difficult I advised that
I don't take my phone with me when I fly. "Well, we will send your boarding pass to your email" replied the operator in a voice of complete dis-belief.
Several hours later no boarding pass but a confirmation on my phone ! Rang again and told I had to go to a kiosk at the airport - did so but could not get a boarding pass. Told to go to the gate and swipe my phone - did so but the swipe machine would not work. Told to go to the check in line back in the terminal to get pass.
DID NOT DO SO!. Eventually after I watched all the other pax board the "human" at the gate attacked her computer and issued me a boarding pass and told me to hurry onto the a/c. Next day on return was not any better. It appears that the whole episode was my fault as I did not "receive a bar code on your phone"

You don't get a barcode on your phone. It's a series of letters and numbers ONLY. Any type of mobile phone with SMS can get a BP from JQ.

Charging for face-to-face check-in is a bit low. Air Asia tried to do that last year and there was a huge backlash, so they postponed it and are trying to introduce it again in a more subtle manner. It's clear to see JQ are trying to sneak this one in too. Really though, what is the precentage of passengers who actually check-in at the airport nowadays? I never check-in at the airport (for a domestic flight). It's a sad excuse to gain more ancillary income. Take note of the airfares they're setting now and compare it to the prices next year. I highly doubt they'll be cheaper with the "unbundling " of human check-in after Nov 1.

I really don't check-in with staff when the airline provides other methods. IMHO, I don't care whether JQ introduce it or not - but I predicted that Tiger would have done it first!

Where I do have issues is if you get charged because of a system error or similar where you can't check in, and ditto where they don't provide kiosks at airports where you can check in.

Um, they're not first to do it ... Tiger already charge for airport counter check in

"... Self Service Kiosks across every domestic airport in Australia and New Zealand and Automatic Check-in so that you never need to worry about the check-in process again. ..."

Not applicable ...

... mind you it would be great for those WP's looking for a lengthened Flounge experince ... ;)

We're already working through a (possible) new Technique to see if that can happen :D

I think you meant to say 'queue'??!

Although if Jetstar had a huge cue I'd be avoiding that too hahaha. Thanks for the laugh!!

Virgin? Up market? What hole..:p

Seriously though they will need to fix their self service kiosks first, frequently when I book thru QF the booking corrupts and can be only checked in manually! I certainly won't be paying in that case.

Wonder if they'll charge in the QF Club? Maybe I missed that...

Thanks for the correction. Didn't think Tiger were charging!

No worries ... it's strange that in some ways JQ is positioning itself away from TT (eg. with the ability to earn points etc) but then in others brings itself closer (by including no luggage with any base economy fare or bundle, and then charging for check in).
