Hi all,

Apologies in advance if this should be under the "Airline Loyalty Programs" section - but I just wasn't sure. Please move it, if it should be.

It's my husband's 40th in December, and I am planning a "fancy" weekend in Sydney for him as part of his celebrations. We live in Melbourne.

Currently, we have enough QFF points to fly one of us in J return from Mel-Syd. By the time I book - we will probably have about 40k worth of points. I looked at the fares for the period we were going (Fri Dec 16th - Sun Dec 18th), thinking I would just purchase the second ticket. I have no problem buying the second ticket - but was kind of surprised that it was going to cost $597 each way, straight off the Qantas website.

Given that I will have about 40k in points, I know there will be alittle left over that I could put towards "points + pay" for the second ticket - but the small amount of points that will be left over, won't make that much of a difference to price - I don't think.

So - what are my options ? I don't really know much about upgrade requests etc, but do know that I need a "sure thing" as I would hate for him to be in J and me in Y. Am I just best to "bite the bullet" and pay the published price for the fare and be done with it ?

I am only QFF bronze, but am a Centurion card holder - which I don't think is of any benefit in this situation.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brooke

Hi Brooke, have you considered using the points for 2 mixed class rtn? J to SYD and Y back, cost is 48,000 for 2 people + $188
cash

Picture is a screen shot ( may not work as I'm posting from iPhone ). This is based on an Any Seat Award which earns points and status credits but could also be done as a classic award.

I would put that money saved on the J rtn to great use in SYD over the weekend.
Happy travels :)

Have you considered taking one of the international JQ sectors between MEL and SYD?

JQ30 leaves MEL on Friday mornings for $329 in StarClass, JQ29 and JQ35 return on Tuesdays - not as nice as QF J, but a little bit nicer than economy, earns points / status credits at business class rates (admittedly only 1250 / 40 for this flight), with access to the international business lounge (and maybe even the first class lounge if either of you are Platinum, or can arrange to meet a Platinum on the same flight).

That way you could use points for both of your tickets on your QF flight in the other direction and come out slightly ahead.

Other way is that at present One Path insurance have an offer out for QFFs where you take out an insurance policy and hold it for 2 monts and you get 10k points per policy... I have taken out 4 policies and for about $120 should get 40k QFF points...

If you should have 8k points left over from the first return J seat you could probably take out only 3 policies for probably around $90? Then add whatever the taxes are (can't see as i don't have enough points myself at the moment) but another $25? so only a bit over $100 or so all up?

If you took out the policies this week you probably wouldn't get points for 3 months or so (July) but should still be J sets left by then?

You will 40,000 QFF points for ~$120? Please explain as I have been ignoring the One Path thread. :(

With the fares currently on the qantas website I would suggest waiting until about June/July before purchasing. There is some chance that you can get something cheaper.

Also points plus pay provides poor value for money when purchasing airfares. Having said that I do understand the wish to use the points to reduce costs, just I would pay the money and look for better value from the points.

There are several options but to get all the info you really need to read the thread.

Well the first 20 to 30 posts should cover the basics.

JohnK, to save you the trouble, i took out about 3 policies costing about $8 per month and one costing about $11 per month.. so 3 x months worth of payments (combined $35) plus about one extra $8 payment gets me up around $120 paid out... I get the $120 worth of payments as 120 points plus coz i used the WW EDR card to pay for the policies there is another 120 points, plus hopefully any week now i will receive the 10k points per policy as i have completed the T&C of the offer... so yes, a tidy earner for $120...
