Referring to a newspaper article today . Courier Mail -
police-called-in-over-baggage-fee-fight-on-ryanair-flight

"Spanish newspaper La Provincia said the disruption happened when low-cost Ryanair tried to charge one passenger extra for carry-on baggage and his friends aboard the plane "mutinied". "He said that, of the 168 passengers, only 64 were allowed to re-board the flight."

This is becoming more of a problem as the airlines introduce a carry on only luggage travel with lower priced fares.

There are people knowingly abusing the allowance to save, then fill the overheads to the max showing no consideration for other passengers to share the space. I'm surprised that the overheads don't collapse. Its becoming ridiculous.

I have never seen an airline check any carry on baggage (*one exception) even though they usually have a volumetric and scales at the gate for this purpose. (*American Airlines EJR ? 35-40 seats very restricted overhead space)

When are the airlines going to enforce the regulations?

When are the airlines going to enforce the regulations?
There have been references here and there on the forum about enforcement of the carry on rules.

It does happen though it appears to be that it is more common at International departures than Domestic. For what it's worth I have been asked once at domestic.

Certainly Tiger seem to enforce locally.

Although on my recent JQ/3K/TA/JQ flights all on carry-on fares I wasn't weighed once - albeit I was within limits. Interestingly ther was more room in the overheads than on most QF SYD-MEL's

Try flying AA LGA-MIA.Everyone has 3 plus bags and an announcement made after about half pax boarded that no more overhead space and large carryons will be gate checked and have been the last~4 times I have flown this sector.

Perth International are very zealous in their enforcement

SQ used to weigh cabin baggage at PER and there is also the man at the door to immigration aswell...

Recently on Delta I have seen one bag 60x60x25 cm taken on board and it would not fit the overheads. had to be taken away for storage. This is an airline that charges for checked baggage.

The thing I've never understood about the guy at the entrance to immigration is "Why is he needed?" Why don't the checkin staff stop you?

I've only been checked once or twice in 10yrs of travelling.

Since airlines have started charging for checked baggage cabin bag 'abuse' has risen dramatically from my observations.

Funnily enough I seem to have the worst problems on QF flights where checked baggage is free...on a 737 flight if EVERY PAX has a full size cabin bag there is no way there will be enough cabin space.

My pet hate are the PAX who dump their bags in forward cabin overheads then proceed to sit down the back....grrr

Edit. You will never complain again about OZ DOM cabin baggage after travelling US DOM...truly crazy stuff

Ryanair in the news again?

I wonder how many more of these incidents we are going to read as the airlines tighten the grip on everything.

Still waiting for the standing only flights which should leave a lot of room for carry-on unless they pack everyone in like sardines. ;)

One of my favorite examples. This thing was massive would have easily stood as high as the armrest.

People don't always front up to check-in with everything they intend to carry on-board.

When I go home for holiday's , I have to buy gifts for everyone , I at-least have 15 kg in my Carry on ( i.e. I am well and truly past my check-in allowance even though I travel in J for holidays) and then I abuse the carry on limit to save. :D

It depends on the sectors, but in general, the shorter the flight, the more carry-on luggage you see. Apparently in this day and age waiting 3 mins at a carousel for your luggage is a time luxury no-one can afford. What I want to know is, when are humans going to become less stupid about this and realise that their individual lifespan really is longer than an hour and they can wait 5 mins for something. It's the instant-gotta-have-it-now craziness that drives it all. The pay for hold luggage doesn't help either. It's not as if people travel with less, they just sneak it through and see if they get caught or not. It doesn't make money for the airline, it costs money as resources are now diverted to offloading oversized bags.

Seriously, save $10 on checked luggage...? Most people spend more than that on a daily basis on coffee alone. Priorities are a bit strange these days.

And don't forget the people who spring out of their seats as soon as the wheels hit the ground just so they can stand in the aisle for 5 minutes while the plane taxis to the terminal and they open the doors

 Guilty as charged after overbuying at Eumundi Markets. Shrek to me at the BNE JQ check in "Are you checking that in?" Points to overstuffed Keepall on the floor, "checking what in honey??? " I also gave him a deathstare and trod on his toes to get the message across ;)

5 mins? If only! Try 25 minutes last time I checked in luggage and that was just for the baggage carousel to be turned on. Just to get my bag involved waiting about one third of the flight time to get to my destination.

I was on an Easyjet flight Bordeaux France to London Stansted. When checking in for the flight they looked at our bags and then at the gate 2 staff looked at and lifted everyones bags. They asked many people to put their bags in the steel measuring frame. Heaven help anyone who had the slightest bit sticking out, even wheels.

Our flight had been delayed and it was great entertainment and very interesting when people were told that the bags would have to be checked in at a higher rate. There were some very ugly Brits.

I'm a professional photographer and we travel with a little gear as possible, checking in only the gear that we can afford to have sent to Timbuktoo. (If they can guarantee it arrives with me, intact, operational and with nothing stolen I'd check another 25% of the gear!)

This means the my roller bag has to carry the camera, required lenses and minimal equipment to allow me to get the job done, should the hold luggage go astray or miss the flight. Unfortunately, that gear weighs about 12kg - yep, it's over the limit including the bag (carry-on approved size, but not weight:oops:). But I can't do my job without the gear, and I don't think the airline will be willing to pay my rate for the missed day of shooting, or offer explanations to the client why we have to spend $$$$ on rental gear (if we can do so!!)

I also have a laptop and some mags etc to read on the flight and the lounge - this backpack style bag goes under my seat or on top of the roller bag.

I remember being pulled up in Fiji with the roller bag by security and having them lift it. "No you'll need to check - too heavy." Explained camera gear, which got me a huge smile, a nod of the head and he happily waved me through to immigration. Nice to have an understanding guy/girl on the door rather than a typical "heavy" who doesn't give a toss about anybody or anything else but "the rules".:)
