The Operational Upgrade Thread

It wasn't QF but AA but I thought I'd mention it because I'm sure the only reason I got it was WP status. MIA-LHR on Sunday evening was completely full and the gate op-uped about 6 pax including me and a colleague travelling on the same PNR from Y to J.

I too had an OPUP on AA last week. Was the 24th Nov (busiest air travel day of the year) from LAX to LAS (probably one of the least visited destinations for Thanksgiving; I assume lots of transfers to other places).

Pre-selected 20B (exit on an MD80), beep at gate with 'DUPLICATE!' showing on the BP reader. Agent came back with boarding pass saying "we've got you a more comfortable seat here sir!" and gave me 4B.

whY was heaving, F had 4 other people in it. I can't believe there were no other EXP's on the flight and I got bumped. Thanks AA!

Feel ripped off, checked my statement after a flight from syd-jhb. Said I was upgraded when I wasn't - whats the go with that

Could it be that you were supposed to be upgraded but for some reason did not get your new boarding pass or someone else (friends of the crew perhaps ;)) were given your upgrade?

Thought that but the manifest had me sitting in business. Hopefully they will give me an upgrade on the way home. Also my last leg til lifetime gold, would be an added bonus

Op-up on QF412 this morning from MEL-SYD - on an A330 VH-EBN (2x2x2 in J)

Actually went to J Lounge and asked for an ODU, she looked at profile and said you've been given a complimentary upgrade and printed for an E seat.

First J trip in the A330. Must say the seats are really wide - had inches either side of me and I'm not a beanpole. Given the short distance of the flight not having gate-gate IFE is a let-down and the seatbacks are not that far away.

As for the new VH-EBO I actually don't think it will be too bad.
The IFE units take up 2" (unit and divider) so removing from 6 seats gives you 12" to play with. Thus I suspect the EBO seats will only be 2" narrower than EBJ/EBM/EBN so they will still be pretty large. Middle seat is no different to window in climbing over someone.
And you get the benefit of gate-gate IFE.

DId you check if someone was sitting in your "op-up" business seat?

I didn't get upgraded from business to first so couldnt tell. Also I changed my seat close to boarding to sit with a mate, wondering if that stuffed my chances. I'm sure though they wouldnt have reversed my upgrade

Ahhh! You were already in business class and should have been upgraded to first class. May well be near impossible to find out now unless someone with access to flight records has a look.

I would be disappointed if I was selected for an op-up and did not actually get the op-up due to some error or the op-up was given to someone else.

Luckily I didn't apply for an upgrade, lose the points and not get it. I find on that leg I get upgraded more than 50% of the time

The agent almost certainly did; they probably were not aware!

I reckon that explains it - well you did get to sit with your mate ...

Wife and I received 2 x OP Ups (Y to PE) from LAX-BNE on Dec 3.
We both have Gold Status but were traveling on non-upgradeable Sale tickets.
Flight was not full in any of the cabins.

We did check-in at the AA desk in MIA and were handed our BPs at this time - maybe AA have this discretion; I do not know. We were thrilled.

I suppose one of the good things about first is not having to sit next to someone you don't know so managed 50% of the benefit just miss the lay flat seats. Last time I'll change seats though

Mrs MatF and I were fortunate enough to be given opups from Y+ to J for our MEL-SIN QF9 (744) flight on Tuesday. It was much appreciated - those J seats are v.nice! (first time)

I must admit, it was a bit of a struggle to go back to Y+ for our SIN-LHR QF31 (744) leg thereafter.

We were given 16 J/K (exit row, upstairs). We were advised of the change as we were leaving the MEL F Lounge to board :)

Trip report to follow, when I get some spare time :)

My first OpUp on Thursday. Y to Y+ on QF1 on both sectors.

Hoping I'll score the same on the way back in Jan.

Somebody in Qantas likes me. When flying Syd-Eze, I always get upgraded to premium economy seats (still economy service, but can't complain).
As of now, I am sitting on business class seats on my flight to EZE (having bought economy, and not even at Qantas, but at LAN).

Originally, I was able to select premium economy seats (37G). When boarding, I got a red light at the machine that checks the boarding pass, and I was told to wait. To my surprise, I was issued a new boarding pass on 30J - cocoon-style seats, with premium economy service.

I love Qantas!

QF743 23 December 2010 SYD-ADL

Was watching the seat map and availability closely on expertflyer. Only J,D,I and Y fares available and there were moving around in the 80 hours before the flight with J classes decreasing and Y increasing. Thought it was a good chance for an op-up. Heard the gate agent talking about moving me before boarding and ended up in business, absolutely no notice of the change when scanning my WP card - just a different seat number on my docket.
