What sort of $ saving would you need to book a LCC?

It will be a bit of an adventure and a change from the usual London-Melbourne trips
Definitely sounds like a great adventure but 7 legs is way over the top and one I would not want to even consider.

In this type of situation I would happily pay an extra $500 or so to keep it down to 2-3 legs on more reputable carriers.

To each their own I guess.

Air Arabia 0035 Istanbul Sabiha - 0635 Sharjah $131.05
What are you going to do in Saudi from 0635 until 2145?
Air Arabia 2145 Sharjah - 0300 Chennai $164.60

16/03/11
Jetstar 22:10 Singapore - 0420 Darwin $130.20
If you're paying sector fares SIN/DRW & DRW/MEL you may as well enjoy a stopover in DRW. By that stage you won't know whether you're Arthur or Martha!
17/03/11
Jetstar 0730 Darwin - 1310 Melbourne Tullamarine $169

Total $781.85 incl Taxes, but no bags etc.

All on A319/320/321 aircraft.
Bit worried about misconnects though.

Hell yeah! Your trip report would be an interesting read indeed.

Sharjah is in the UAE not Saudi Arabia and is about 10 miles from Dubai, so plenty to do there.

Cheers

This is a little bit OT, but my experience with JQ last week.

SYD-HKT vv. Jetflex departure and StarClass return.

1) Still chasing QFF points, even though my QFF number was printed on the BP from SYD-HKT.

2) No lounge avaliable in HKT, even though flying StarClass.

3) Meal in StarClass are a joke, SYD-PER QF whY are better.

4) When seats (in starclass) are in full recline by passenger infront, it's very difficult to get out of your seat.

5) Seats can be reclined during meal service, as happened to me, and it's almost impossible to get the tray table out (side arm) and FA's don't care.

6) No option to by the JetPlus option when doing a "Flight/Hotel combo", which includes food and AVOD.

7) Did get a notification (SMS) about a delay to the flight, which is very good of Jetstar.:):):)

8) Prices for food and beverage weren't too bad (Just take $50-$100 cash with you)

9) If you have a family and want to travel on the cheap o/s, JQ could be an option for you.

I know that you get what you pay for, but this was my experience. I'm putting it down to a "life experience", lol.

JQ
Short haul, no worries
Long haul, probably not.

JQ considering flying to Europe....not with me onboard :)

My answer to this question, is a bit like others - it depends. On short sectors, I would be more likely to take an LCC. Certainly Air Asia and Jetstar have apppeared on my travels. As an example on SIN-KUL, the SQ or MH options can be quite a bit more, and the only extra seems to be a drink. In the case of 3K, they actually use the proper terminals, unlike Air Asia.

I have done the *class flight MEL-DPS, and that turned out to be a good flight - so I find *class is quite acceptable for the longer flights. The downside is that there aren't that many *class options at the moment - and I wish that they would put in on the trans-cons
My experience KUL-SIN is the exact opposite.Air Asia quoting a fare of zero,MH was 130MR-but included a checked bag and all fees as well as a snack and a drink. When our bags taxes etc were added to Air asia's base fare it was 115MR-but no food.Plus with MH we could check bags in at Sentral, departed and arrived at more convenient terminals plus had bags checked through on QF SIN-BNE.For 5 bucks extra it was well worth it.
Yes I can afford the legacy airlines but have always tried to save what i could.Outside Australia I would only consider a LCC if nothing else available, further flights that day and only a single sector with no connections to be made that day.
In Australia I have to use LCCs(if you call DJ and JQ that)out of my home base MCY and will use them if cheaper than QF-with the exception of DPO which is only served by QF.

As I said, they the legacy carriers can be more expenisve, but MH do have good promo's, but you have to travel at those times. I flew 3K KUL-SIN yesterday - it was 86 MYR on 3k (with bags) or 303 MYR on MH. I always check the various carriers.
