I have always looked for ppl to guest when travelling. I do not require them to sit near me in the lounge as I like "Reggie" time.

I remember what it was like as a kid.... Looking longingly at those closed dors wondering what it was like!!
 
I have no interest in Facebook but wouldn't having something like lounge meetings in both then burden people (or make people forget) to post in both or even possibly favour one over the other?

I guess the idea was to mainly keep to AFF/FT but for some, saying you’re leaving home to take a flight to XYZ on Facebook is a standard practice and it could simplify lounge meet-ups for a certain group of people. It was just worded badly.

Personally I generally post my approach to an airport by train or car on Twitter, which then posts to Facebook, but it depends how good your Facebook feed is if it’ll pick up my ramblings :p

I’ve heard mention of the FT flightconnect app, can anyone tell me more about what this is and how that would be useful?

I love guesting people as well and no they do not have to spend anytime with me in the lounge. I won't feel offended.

I really did not know about lounges until I started flying for work in 2003 when a colleague guested me a few times in SYD and did not have to wonder for too long as I had access in my own right a few years later.

Perhaps you are right. I am just not the Facebook or Twitter type to post my every movement for people to see/read or whatever.

And I am no way against people posting lounge meetings anywere they feel like it. You will get some people like me who will stick to AFF/Flyertalk. I do not want to start using BA97, Flightconnect or any other website. I have enough trouble keeping up with AFF and almost neglect Flyertalk.
 
I for one appreciate the additional option that FB offers. Having FB and Twitter installed on my phone, I am on both a lot more than AFF as they're more instantaneous and convenient to check for updates. To me FB is thus potentially better for last minute impromptu lounge meets. I also have the AFF iPhone app, but it does take a little while to scroll through to the correct page. Anyway, I think both FB and AFF complement each other and people should feel free to post on whichever they feel like. And in no way is anyone suggesting that the FB group will replace AFF - the 2 co-exist just like many other blogs, websites and fora and their FB/Twitter presence. If anything, managed effectively, I think the FB group will enhance AFF.

Maybe admin can look into developing an API for posting lounge meet updates directly from AFF to the FB group, which eliminates the necessity of posting twice? :)

While the message from the group didn’t suggest moving things away from the site, it didn’t suggest doing both either. Perhaps the language of the post could have been better. My impression of it was that lounge meet-ups could be posted to the AFF Facebook Group instead



I note it didn’t say "on here as well", but I’m pedantic like that :p

Facebook would end up being just as awful as here for arranging lounge meetings - here on AFF you have to find the relevant thread and hunt through it for the airport/date combos (which aren't always clear); on Facebook it would be another disorganised stream of information that would take forever to find someone at the same airport and date as yourself. Personally, the chance of me using it = non-existent, simply because it would take too much effort to do so.

I think I suggested somewhere else that a nice database arranged in a calendar view that allowed people to enter information in a structured format that could be searched or displayed nicely would be great.. in saying that, I'll be the first to accuse myself of being an armchair critic because it's probably beyond my capabilities to write a web app to do this.

Have you had a look at the standard Calendar feature on AFF? See Member Events. I'd imagine this would be perfect for members to enter their lounge visits.

Each website has its uses.

One thing I would like to see removed on AFF is the different months removed and maybe just have one forum for each year, I can't see the need for a separate forum for each month.

So you mean we have one forum (sub-forum) for each year, e.g. "2010", and we put all the threads for each month of lounge meets in it?

I'd be supportive of that idea, although not sure what consequences might result of it per se. All of the Dos, dinners, drinks etc. would be in the same forum. I'd mandate that the 12 threads for lounge meetups (i.e. one for each month) be stickied in the forum if we moved to such a model.

I think you would only need to sticky the current month; as its this month; like today if I am reading the Iphone that I might be going to the airport and then can check to see who is traveling.

Just did a test / dummy entry for 23/9 .... this would work well but it might be a bit tedious for those who travel loads as events are entered manually.

I have -- it's close, but the problem is it's not specific enough. I'm thinking of a calendar like display with an option to add an event with fields like:
  • Airport/Terminal
  • Lounge
  • Time of Arrival
  • Number of Guests

What would be brilliant (and i've already contacted them about it) is some kind of addition to TripIt where you can easily add lounge access information to any itinerary you have. If we then had an AFF Group that people here could be a member of, and if TripIt would do a separate calendar feed for that group, we could just subscribe to the TripIt Lounge Access Calendar in Outlook/iCal/Thunderbird and easily see who's where and able to guest people in.

No idea if they'd go for it, but I did outline my ideas to them (and they've been very receptive to feature requests in the past when i've contacted them).

That said, I have no idea of the percentage of people here using TripIt. I swear by it though; the Pro subscription is worth it if you do any kind of US travel on a regular basis alone.

All these suggestions are great and suit different people for various reasons but I feel one thing some people miss is that 100% of the people here use AFF....

I totally agree with you here. My reason for suggesting TripIt would be that it required the least amount of effort by users here, not by admin himself. All that would be required would be to forward itinerary to TipIt, put a tick in a box that said 'Lounge Access' or something similar (depending how it was implemented) and it would be done.
