Facebook Group

I'm not sure moving lounge meetups away from the forums, as per the message this afternoon is very good for the site in general.

Plus I dunno how many members are in the Facebook group but there are 18,000+ members of the site and a few hundred active posters at least a month. So more members use AFF than AFF Facebook.

I'll post my lounge meetups here thanks.

You can please yourself as well Sam

And to clarify...

the lounge invites are on both AFF and FB. Nobody has said different.

You are welcome to not be part of the facebook group John, thats your choice, just dont be a hypocrite bagging something you are doing yourself, in just a slightly separate form.
I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Hypocrite? Bragging? I am totally confused why you are replying to my post.

I don't go on Facebook and do not have any intention of joining Facebook. I replied to a post from samh004 on AFF with no further details at hand. If that makes me a hypocrite then so be it. I don't know what I was bragging about though....

I think munitalP said 'bagging', there's a difference... but doesn't matter....

I choose not to post all my meet-ups across Facebook or on the AFF Facebook page. I use Facebook to reach a lot more people that do not know I am a member of AFF or FT. Yes, some could deduce that quite easily, but that isn't the point.

In any case, I do not use Facebook as frequently as I do AFF or FT. Although a more organised system on AFF or FT would be nice (notwithstanding the rather unpopular use of the Calendar feature of the forums), even the clumsy system we have here is fine. Finally, we all here have in common a membership to AFF forums which we can use. Not everyone has a Facebook account, just as much as they may not (and may choose not to) have accounts on Twitter, Gmail, LinkedIn, MySpace, etc. etc.

I've got nothing against - and there's no reason to stop or shun - the practice of AFF friends using Facebook to prompt for meet-ups in lounges, etc.. Same goes for calling each other on mobile (i.e. you have each others' mobile numbers), SMS, Twitter, AFF/FT PM, ba97, etc. etc.

Aahhh! Darn the eyesight.

Anyway I am now more confused about being a hypocrite bagging something or other....

I don't think anyone said anything about moving lounge meets away from the forum? The Facebook group was just offered as an additional option which complements posting lounge meets on the forum, just as BA97 complements AFF/FT.

Can anyone explain to a dinosaur (me) what the advantage of the FB site is over this forum? Not trying to be provocative, or upset anyone, I am just genuinely confused about what FB offers that this site doesn't, and if there is a need to duplicate posting etc

FB does not really have many advantages (or disadvantages) over the forum, however in the case of posting lounge visits, a lot of people visit Facebook (for a variety of reasons) on quite a regular basis (this is true of AFF as well), particularly on mobile devices, so there may be an easier chance if somebody posts on FB when they are around the lounges that somebody else heading to the lounges may pick up.

In reality either system could/can/does/will serve this purpose, YMMV as to your preference, many people do not use FB because they don't have access via work based internet, whereas some people who have Smartphones may have access via their mobile (with asssociated alerts).

I don't think anything done on FB would have an overall effect on AFF, both are essentially free to use systems which facilitate interaction, and the natural equilibrium of systems will pan out, however that may be.

Personally I may use the FB option to post/look for lounge, because I am more likely to look at FB on my way to the lounge, but I often AFF whilst in the lounge to kill time.....

Now serfty there is no way I could have gotten away with a statement like that. ;)

I have asked a very prominent AFF member a number of times to explain to me what I am missing out on by not registering for Facebook. His reply was "Nothing"!

While the message from the group didn’t suggest moving things away from the site, it didn’t suggest doing both either. Perhaps the language of the post could have been better. My impression of it was that lounge meet-ups could be posted to the AFF Facebook Group instead

What do you think if we post lounge visits (if we are able to guest) on here? A lot of us access FB far more often than AFF or FT and I think it would facilitate a few more impromptu gatherings!

I note it didn’t say "on here as well", but I’m pedantic like that :p

Personally for me.... I use FB a lot more than AFF.

The main reason posting Lounge times on FB is appealing to me is because 99% of the time I am in the QP we would have the ability to guest 2 - 3 ppl and if i could see someone was at the airport at the time it would be simple!!

Would not give up AFF for FB or VV.

I enjoy both.

FB "pushes" to my phone though so it is more instant.

I have no interest in Facebook but wouldn't having something like lounge meetings in both then burden people (or make people forget) to post in both or even possibly favour one over the other?

The same issue exists right now with some people not cross posting lounge times on AFF and Flyertalk. Sure it is their right but you just have to wonder why some people even bother to post lounge times.

And then you have the people who are simply not interested in lounge meetings.
