Living with carry on

A big thank you to all for the advice and the various discussion!

Off tomorrow on the first carry on only trip. Here is the plan:

Away 7 days - 2 cities; 3 Hotels!

In the bag:

suit pants
3 business shirts (can double as smart casual)
sox and jox x 2
dual purpose shoes running/casual
2 casual shirts
wash bag
sports kit

On me:

suit jacket
casual shirt
casual pants
dress shoes
sox and jox x1

Collecting on the plane:

Pj's
Amenity kit

The rest I buy there, if required.

The carry on luggage:

2 x Qantas FF bags from last century.

I have been a great proponent of hand luggage only - well, this upcoming Japan trip I'm going to take FULL advantage of my 30kg starclass allowance. Taking over loads of pressies. Returning with loads of books and DVDs.

But all in the one bag.

You also get 20 kg for carry on in starclass

I would have more "smalls" personally. Especially in humidity

If the hotels have washing facilities (and they are not too badly priced) I'd probably consider cutting down to 2 business shirts and 2 casual shirts (inc the one you wear on the plane).

I've done 10 days with 1 business shirt and 2 casual shirts in the past, especially as you have the "sports kit" for any activity which involved serious sweating...

Good to see that JQ are removing the overhead locker equipment to make more room, I do find it irritating that some seats have no space above them!

A really good move IMHO. There still won't be enough for a few people but at least this is a move in the right direction.

Just back from 15 days in North America - 4 cities, three hotels - with two carry on bags only. It was a business trip, so I needed a suit and some business shirts (3). Wore suit on the 'plane and changed into PJ's as soon as they closed the door. Daggy, but served the purpose.

I had seven consecutive nights in the one location so I was able to do laundry (twice) there at the local chinese (really!) laundry at a fraction of the hotel price.

The other key for me, apart from careful planning is to leave the laptop and as many gadgets as possible behind. I had all my work stuff on a USB and only had my iPhone. I used business centres and internet cafes as required. It worked for me.

Be ruthless with all the stuff you collect on the way; discard, throw out an leave behind as much as possible. Ruthlessness with gifts is an acquired art with dire consequences if you get it wrong!

Ten days in Europe in September is the next experiment.

I think i'm going to bite the bullet and do my next US trip carry-on only. Only going for 8 days, but the laptop is really a necessity (not sure I could travel with my iPad only, even with its excellent battery life). Just have to buy myself a bigger carry on now to attempt it.

I won't be based in any one place for more than a night or two, so it'll be a fun challenge without the ability to do much washing on the go

Thanks serfty. Was aware of it, and planning on studying it pretty closely in the weeks leading up to travel.

Looking forward to the challenge, although with so many things to pickup in the US for people (shoes/clothes etc) it'll not be a luggage-free return unfortunately. I'm saving that for my last stop before heading home though, and i'll just buy a suitcase over there.
