Living with carry on

You see Alanis Morrissette didn't really understand irony like most Americans. A black fly in your Chardonnay is not ironic - it's just bad luck (or good luck if you prefer Sauvignon Blanc like normal people).

What however is ironic is chatting in a thread about the switch to HOL referring back to a thread you started about HOL and then checking two bags from JFK to ATL (via MIA) with all clothes (and no back ups) "just to not take up too much space in the overhead on the smaller aircraft so other people have more space" and then getting to ATL and finding your back are lost in the ether.

Now that's ****ing ironic! Stupid ****ing AA ****s losing my ****ing bags AGAIN the stupid ****ing ****s. I think the ****ed up Haitian who elected to get off the aircraft after boarding followed by the deaf or drunk FA should have been an indication that the trip was not going well. Stupid mother****ers.

Jan is not so much "not happy" as bludgeoned to death and buried in a bog!

:D Got to love it!
The last time I took checked luggage it arrived at my hotel 3 days after I got there! As I was checking out the next morning I didn't even bother opening it.

Gone back to Hand Luggage only again now, which will be a nice challenge for my next trip later this month; China, Taiwan & Florida over 13 days! :)

Slightly off topic but I'm often in a position where I can travel internationally with zero luggage. It happens when I'm abroad and I just need to come back to Australia for a day or two.

I've done it a couple of times - with zero checked and zero hand luggage.

But after customs here gave me the 3rd degree when I tried to walk through carrying *nothing* I found it wise to at least carry *something* - even just some duty free. :)

Hi all,

Sometime ago I went completely the other way and went all checked luggage and carried only my Bose headphones onboard.

However after QF lost my bag with laptop inside I have decided to venture back to the carry on only side.

To acheive this on trips of 10-14 days I have purchased a Redoxx Air Boss and will be utilising this new luggage next week on a SYD-PER trip.

I regularly fly int'l business with a rollaboard that is around 11-13KG and a suit bag with no real problems. Though this trip I have brought a duffle bag as well as I knew I would be shopping in various places and the trip is complex in that I have business, business casual, smart casual and casual clothes due to the multi location/functions...

I had this problem at MEL one time with the standard rollaboard/suit bag as I had a whY coloured QF BP but was flying in J on CX. I got quite annoyed and asked - do you want me to go to the CX desk to get a BP. She still weighed my rollaboard at 12KG but then waved me on...

Shaving cream - switched to shaving oil
Deo - switched to smaller cans - Rexona is pretty much the smallest
Cologne - bought the Chanel pour homme mini spays that come in a three pack when bought on board
Tooth paste - use the airline supplied mini tubes (I use colgate anyway)
Sun screen - never out in the sun enough when travelling on business (and often the moisturisers have an SPF factor)
Hair products - number one at the back and number 2 on top abrogates the need for hair products ;)
You will find most deos etc have been relabelled and now are labelled as 100 grams hence legal-putting up against older containers appears to be no difference in size-just labelling.

No way I could go carry on only but by the sounds of things I could be having fun at BNE International on Friday night.

So far I have luggage which should weigh ~11.8kgs and golf bag and clubs weigh exactly 9.0kgs which should just about be fine for my checked limit with SQ. My carry-on could be ~7.5kgs so would be interesting to see if this is weighed and rejected.

Wow I'm saving up for one of those bags. I guess you ordered it on line?

The laptop etc go in the backpack that remains on my back. distribute the weight evenly so neither is over 10Kg (when carrying an Express card) or 7Kg (when only carrying an economy class boarding pass) and all is good.

Was going to say that I always put the heavy stuff in the backpack (which is carried on the back), I can't recall an occasion where they've weighed my rollaboard AND asked me take my backpack off so they could weigh it. Mind you at checkin the other day I was asked by EK for them to weigh my backpack (! I had only used half of my 42kg checked allowance).

I take checked luggage/carry on depending on destination and frequency of flights and duration of the trip, but spare shoes are often the killer. Often I will have carry on coming to Australia, but will check-in the same stuff on the return to Singapore because there's a good chance the luggage will get to the belts the same time as I will.

Actually she's Canadian. And isn't it ironic that the entire song is full of incorrect examples of irony? :D

It is pretty sexy for a softpack.
Still prefer a hard clam-shell though.
Hard clam shell is not needed for carry on and it only adds weight that I would rather use on stuff a want to carry in the bag

Hard shell for carryon is wasting weight and space, as medhead pointed out.

The Airboss is all about carrying as much as you can and wastes very little with excess padding. In my search I went from AFF to FT then to OneBag and that lead me to Red Oxx.

I will post a report on the usefulness of the bag once it has done a trip.

My curiosity got the better of me so I looked up the website: Red Oxx Air Boss Carry On Bag Designed for 1 Bag Business Travelers.
Fitting in a spare pair of shoes is something I can't really do with my current carry on. I look forward to your R/V of the Red Oxx Air Boss. I have 2 queries: can this bag be easily locked eg you want to leave the bag at the Hotel left baggage section? Are there enough pockets for small items eg keys, pens, ear phones etc etc

Locking I beleive will be an issue but no bag is truly safe when left with others. They do sell cable locks or I do think you could put a lock on the monkey grips.

The bag does have front pockets designed for small items but I will report more when I get the bag (hopefully it arrives this week).

I have been a great proponent of hand luggage only - well, this upcoming Japan trip I'm going to take FULL advantage of my 30kg starclass allowance. Taking over loads of pressies. Returning with loads of books and DVDs.

But all in the one bag.
