I think you will find that many flyers do just that - I have friends who travel to HNL just for the shopping.

However a lot frequent flyers actually dont even get out of the country.

Interesting take on WW as a "greedy multinational" - more likely to find those overseas than here.

I would have thought clever frequent flyers would buy their cheap clothes overseas instead of buying the same clothes in Oz at prices inflated by greedy multinationals.

Many FFs are to busy working on their overseas trips to have any spare time to go shopping for the family's clothing requirements for the next season. On my last trip (in Feb to HKG) the only "shop" I had time to visit was the coffee shop in the foyer of the office building.

I had planned to buy a new pair of shoes while there (only carried one pair with me). Unfortunately all the shoe shops around the Times Square area were closed each night after 10:30pm, which was the time I managed to get back to the hotel most nights.

So Woollies remains a viable clothing supplier for me, even with >10 overseas trips in 7 months.

So greedy multinationals are why we have dear clothing in Australia.silly me I thought it had a lot to do with higher costs here.
Besides virtually all my clothing is bought from greedy multinationals in the USA usually for less than a quarter of what i would pay here.Obviously not as greedy there.:shock:

Exactly right! US multinationals have much more local competition than those in Australia and so they are cheaper It's still the same third-world junk though. Forget Times Square for bargains. I bought a "new" camcorder there and used it for six hours before it failed. A trustworthy repair shop in Brisbane told me that although it looked new it was very second hand. They quoted $525 for a new drum assembly (heads) realignment of tape path, and half a dozen other faults. Lesson learnt.

Is the cost of doing business really that much higher here? Or is it some nonsense excuse that gets trotted out every time someone questions the high price of goods in Australia.

And while higher levels of competition may result in lower retail prices, it also have other effects on the overall economy and individual people. It can result in lower margins, resulting in poor working conditions for staff, viability of the company and hence job security for employees and poor returns for shareholders/investors etc.

Anyone who believes large retail companies are making too much profit has the right to by shares in the company and benefit from the situation .

Did you get the "no warranty" one? Although they're usually flogged as "new" most of the time they're factory (or even dodgy home job) refurbs. The only trustworthy place for electronics are the franchises such as Fortress, etc.

Yep... in my ignorance I accepted their word that Sony had a worldwide 12-month warranty ... but of course not on secondhand junk as it turned out.

True. Just as anyone who objects to big retailers who rip off farmers and other suppliers, transport companies, and bulldoze their way into places where most residents don't want them (such as Mullumbimby, Maleny, Grafton, Kemsey, Geelong West, Mount Evelyn, to name a few) have the right to SELL their shares in unethical companies, as many thinking Australians, myself included, have done.

I believe I said I was wanting a new pair of shoes and said the "Times Square Area". I would not purchase many things inside Time Square (with the exception of Royce's chocolate, of course). But there are many suitable shopping opportunities in the blocks around Times Square, especially when staying at Crowne Plaza.

But electronics is not something I would be buying around there. Though I will admit that on my previous trip I purchased a 16GB MicroSD memory card at Wan Chai Computer Market, which is one MRT stop or a 15 min walk from Times Square at Causeway Bay.

The Wanchai computer centre is directly outside the Wanchai MTR station and I wouldn’t associate it in any way with Causeway Bay, much less Times Square.

I lived there for most of my life and rarely visited Times Square, it’s pretty poor.

Maybe, but I'll be my last dollar that the shops in that area are profitable, and convenience will win out. The very people complaining the loudest will also be seen in the very same shop they complained about.

Um, isn't that kind of what I implied (one MRT stop or a 15 min walk) I normally choose the walk option.

When staying at Crowne Plaza or Holiday Inn Causeway Bay, and many colleagues staying at Excelsior Hotel, Times Square Area is likely to frequented. But shopping is not an activity I do there. Eating, now that is a different story (not inside Times Square, but there are many good eateries in the streets around the area).

And the Woollies Maleny store is doing very well.Turns out it was far from a majority of locals that didnt want them there.

'Fraid not! Woolworths' spin doctors keep saying the Maleny store is doing well but the truth is quite different and obvious to anyone who goes there. It remains the only Woolworths store in Australia not to list monthly turnover figures in internal documents. Wonder why!
