I’m not sure how an etymologist would be able to assist a police officer. An entomologist may be able to.

Admittedly this gem was via ChatGPT rather than my own noggin' -:

An entomologist studies how insects colonise a body.

An etymologist studies how words colonise a language.

Both deal in evolution.
Both track timelines.
Both look for tiny details others miss.

One examines larvae.
The other examines lexemes.

And in a pinch, the etymologist can at least explain why the detective keeps calling them the wrong thing.

I've just finished a Lee Child/Jack Reacher called 'Exit Strategy' . Are there no editors any more? I noted in an action scene that he refers to men as 'guys' ; well I noticed one, then several, and then I was so irritated I started counting. I also wrote the page numbers so that when I write the email to the publisher they can go straight to the relevant pages. So, we have the word count for 'guys' per page - 6, 6, 7, 7, 8 ,4 ,4 ,3 ,3 , 7, 9, 6, 7 .There must have been a fair bit of action on a couple of pages where it was used 8 & 9 times. Of course it totally ruined the book for me! It's really sloppy and irritated me no end. I'm thinking of offering me services to the publisher. I note now that Lee Child has a brother and/or son collaborating - and it is so easy to tell another voice is narrating. Anyway that's me grumble for the night

Perhaps you meant my grumble for the night
