I'm getting off a LA flight from Sydney scheduled to arrive at 3.10pm. Would old hands book a JQ flight to Christchurch at 4.45pm or should I wait for the 7.35pm? It will be a jetflex fare so minimum penalty if I miss it. Will have luggage. Thanks.

With nothing to declare, you should be able to make your JQ connection.

Don't forget that JQ check-in closes 30 minutes before departure - no messing around and no exceptions! So 1615h it is. Note that transfer buses take about 5 minutes to travel between terminals; I think they leave every 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, you can walk to domestic, and that takes 10 minutes at brisk pace (which I'm sure you're more than capable of ;)).

In my last few experiences at AKL, I've been able to get out much less than an hour, so you should be fine as long as you don't get the third degree bench treatment (very unlikely if you've been to New Zealand before and don't have anything declarable).

The only other fly in the soup will be if LA800 is late in departing, in which there will be a fine cut. So far in all my experience with LA800 it has always been on time, so I'm naive to any irrops on this flight.

With no QP now (only a JQ lounge - paid entry), you probably don't want to be waiting around AKL D more than you have to.

They also employ smartgate at AKL if your passport is chipped (and Australian or NZ). Dependent on numbers and how many are using SG vs. Immi officers, this may save you some time at immigration.

If the JQ fares are cheap enough; buy a seat on both flights.

Then take the one that suits you best after arrival; throw away the other ticket.

Yes but those full fare Jetstar fares get you full Qantas Status credits; and are handy when your flight is late.

JetFlex fare rules

1. This Booking is refundable if your original booking was made as a JetFlex fare. A refund fee will apply.

2. Subject to availablity and payment of all applicable amounts, limited changes can be made to your Booking as follows;

  • Date, time, origin, destination and passenger name changes are permitted subject to these fare rules (except passenger name changes are not permitted on Any Seat Award bookings).
  • For date, time, origin and destination changes, your new fare will be at least the amount of the fare you originally purchased, and may be more. At the time your booking is changed, you must pay the difference (if any) between the fare you originally purchased and the fare available on the date of the change. A fare difference is not payable for permitted passenger name changes.
  • Date, time, origin, destination and permitted passenger name changes may be made by telephoning Jetstar Telephone Reservations (see our contact us page on jetstar.com for contact details) or at any Jetstar counter at an airport but must be completed by the end of the day you were originally scheduled to depart.
Book the 4:40pm one and if you are late just get put on the later flight.

I don't think turtlemichael is going via Sydney on LAN just because the plane experience is that much better. :p

The OH wants to avoid the stress (where is the spirit of living dangerously?) so I think we'll be going for the later flight. I hope the new JQ lounge is half decent :-|
