Been having an ongoing issue with QF for 8 weeks.

The phone number on my daughters QF account is mine and text messages never arrive.
I can’t change to auth app because they want me to verify the phone via text..... which never arrives. You can see where this is going.

I’ve had a few calls with QF & the last one lasted 45 min, going around in circles and achieving nothing. By the end I think we were both a bit embarrassed.
They’ve called me back 3 times, between 4am and 7am over the past month. Once while I was on a flight.... a flught they could see in their system. Another, at 4am. Each time I email them back with specific things they can do to remedy things, because calling means enduring another 30+ min hold.

Long stretches of a week go by with no action, despite me telling them they simply need to temporarily remove 2FA and that I accept all the risks. I’d sign it in blood at this point, but they’d probably need to verify it by text.

This post is somewhat a rant and somewhat a cry for help.

The past few years, I’ve had to interact with QF maybe half a dozen times, and in every situation it’s something they’ve messed up, and they make simple things unnecessarily complex to solve.

In the same period I’ve had hundreds of flights with other airlines, dealing with staff on far more complex issues, and it’s a breeze. Knowing how great other airlines are adds to the frustration that a brand I used to think was awesome... just isn’t anymore.

I gave up on sending my business to QF a long time ago, so this isn’t an “I’m giving up” post. The doors closed on that one years ago. But for those couple of flights each year I’m forced to fly with QF and interact with people there... it’s soul destroying.

Heck, my last Qantas flight, the agent didn’t want to add my frequent flyer number. Told me I should have added it on the Qantas website at least 2 weeks before departure. They told me this, at the gate, as boarding was about to start... because my number didn’t show on the boarding pass. Booked on qf.com, number showed on the outbound, just not the return. Can't make this up.

Facebook / X mesages tend to be the most reliable in getting proper resolutions. They take a little while to get back to you but I find that they actually get the things done.

I am no technology expert, but this raises the question: is 'two-factor authentication' vital for companies?

I find it a pain. How much fraud does it stop?

Well 2FA with QF is a joke for me. I can log in using email or security questions. But not to change my phone number. this has been going on for 6 years.. I destroyed my old phone including the Sim card. To change that number they have to text it. It probably was reallocated months ago.
So I only log on to QF once a year to send my points to Mrsdrron.

It’s your account after all.

At times annoying but much better than just the old password. With AI out of control, I know what I’d prefer.

But even then, it’s only a matter of days before AI hacks your accounts…😳

2FA using SMS is getting outdate, but it's still effective at stopping simpler attacks (like someone buying your passwords off the darkweb). SMS based things are also vulnerable in a way like keeping a master password - if someone gets access to your number they can do a lot of damage. There are increasingly more ways to hack into someones SIM these days.

So 2FA is shifting away to using authenticator apss and other things like Passkeys. Think of it like a cat and mouse game - as one levels up, the other counters and also improves. I'm sure AI will also throw another spanner at this.
