When we visited Naples in the 1970's the old saying "See Naples and die" came to my mind. Not because of its claim that Naples was so magnificent that there was nothing else in the world left worth to see but because you would probably be murdered there.

And yet here you are ... ;)

It was Hilo that your ship had to leave 500 PAX behind after the Tsunami warning!

If your phone goes off, run like the wind back! 😳
Yes. It’s the tsunami capital of the world apparently and the tour guide was excellent at telling us the story. Decimated by multiple tsunamis just this century as it’s the first place to experience a tsunami from earthquakes from Alaska through to Chile.

There’s no Hilo Hattie in Hilo but I see there’s one in Kona where we will be tomorrow.

Today it was volcanoes.

Steam vent.

Smoke and ash. Last Friday on eruption the wind was blowing towards the car park and there’s volcanic glass and ash everywhere. Being a national park there’s no souvenering.

There used to be Hilo Hatties EVERYWHERE. Became a running joke on our HI cruise years ago.

The guide must have been listening to you. He made explicit comments about Hilo Hattie. He's also doing some tours tomorrow from Kona. He's been excellent. We are just getting on the tender and plan to swim at least once in Hawaii.

Some of the ash and rocks from the eruption a couple of days ago. The car park would have been closed as the gases are toxic. Made us understand why Bali caused so many issues for planes. There were also strands of gold fibres that we just couldn't make appear in photos. These contain a lot of silica.

Also so pleased to report that we are almost normal again. We have three days left. Planning to hammer the drinks package as it's been sadly bereft of doing so. How sick were we? I have some memory of it but I am told I was unconscious in the Hawaiian main shopping mall in Waikiki and the security guard was about to call for an ambulance. I have some memory of it but MrP won't give me the full details. I recovered consciousness and seemed to recover so security let me go. In hindsight I think it tanked my blood pressure. MrP - the day before the cruise started he was saying that if we weren't so far away he would be on the plane back home but was too ill to move. Did I mention it was a wicked virus? We were fully immunised for both covid and the super strength flu virus. I developed mine in Australia the week before we left. Had we known what we were about to experience we would have cancelled the entire trip. But we didn't know. We've not experienced anything like this before.
