How does Accor treat you as an Elite guest?

A word of warning - the lower category rooms are TINY - 14sqm if I recall correctly.

Would highly recommend at least a mid category if you can.
Agreed - from memory there was also no cupboard/wardrobe in the room, and no iron or board. Instead you had a (very artistic) metal frame to hang clothes, and a steamer.

Property: Sofitel Sydney Wentworth
Status: platinum with Accor plus
Room booked: superior room
Room upgraded/type: no
Free internet: Yes
Free breakfast: yes, in lounge
Early check in/late out: Not required

Welcome gift: bottle of legacy 😫 and nice chocolates
Recommend: only if Platinum or above. The value wouldn’t be there for me without the lounge.

Stayed two nights at Sofitel Sydney Wentworth over the weekend. I have seen so many good post-reno reviews, but I thought it was nice without being outstanding.

LOVED the Club Millesime. It had a great vibe, good food and drinks, and is a visually pleasant space. 10/10 on that.

I liked the masculine feel of my room, although was disappointed in no upgrade. No biggie though. No turn down on the first night which I queried the next morning, to be told it occurs by request only.

Good selection for welcome drinks, and the hotel is in a great location.

What disappointed me a little was that I told the hotel in advance that I was there to celebrate my (primary aged) daughter’s birthday. I asked if they could maybe acknowledge her in the welcome card - I didn’t expect anything beyond that. No welcome card existed, and no recognition at all of her birthday. Again, it’s not a huge deal but it’s not what I hoped for.

Next Sydney trip (November) I’m trying Hotel Morris for the first time.
Good to hear that the new lounge has improved on the old one.

Not quite such a bump as two weeks ago, but super lovely luxury corner room with more than ample space for a lazy Saturday

Darned amazing chocolate mousse cake in the lounge today. Trust me to forget a photo of that though.

Keen to see the spread for canapes... and if they have any cognac left after I am done tonight...

Any recent experiences with Novotel Sydney Brighton Beach?

Reviews on AFF and elsewhere haven't been very good - but they all appear to be from before the renovation.

For context we need to be in SYD on the weekend of 27/28Feb which is Mardi Gras. Rates at most places are are off the chart.

Another option is the Airport Pullman - but I see that's been pretty poor recently.

I'm open to other suggestions, including non-Accor options.

I have found the Pullman at SYD to be quite reasonable - only real issue for Plat./Diam. is the communal happy hour bench. Snack food is fine.

In terms of access to CBD, I would consider:
- Mercure Macquarie Park (I think it was previously under Travelodge)
- Sebel Chatswood (roomy 1 bedroom apartment)
- Hotel Morris (but its small 13m2 room) in Haymarket

Meritons @ Mascot would be my go to, more than a room, supermarket below and heaps of restaurants if cooking is passé

I need to earn about 2000 status points with Accor to hit platinum and was wondering if charges during the stay that are added to the bill (dining, drinks, car parking) count towards the earning of Status credits?

I understand that 2000 status points is €800 = to $1421~ aud

Yes, as long as they are charged to your room and settled at checkout, you will earn status points.

so you earn both status points and regular reward points on the stay?

Yes, that's how the Accor program works.

You earn ALL points (currency used for redemptions) and status points (used to determine your status tier, resets annually, has no monetary value) for eligible stays.

Thank you, need to rebook my stay as I found it for $300-400 cheaper and will add some in hotel spend bookings to top up the bill

Hopefully you mean the price direct through ALL has dropped, so you're cancelling and rebooking? Just want to make sure you are booking through a channel eligible to receive points, nights and status benefits.

Stays booked through OTAs like Expedia, Qantas Hotels, and even Amex Travel (outside of FHR/THC, usually) will not be eligible for points, nights and status benefits.

Stays booked through 'traditional' TAs using a GDS are eligible.

Also does it matter if you pay for the stay with accor gift cards?
Yes you can pay with gift cards and still earn the reward and status points… but you can’t pay using reward points and get either of these (well, you can earn for any ‘cash’ portion paid, but the calculation is complex as taxes are usually deducted from the cash portion first).

Also, if you are planning on hitting a certain target number (like 14,000 status points for Platinum), be wary that taxes are not included in the calculation for how many status points you earn, and different brands can have different earn rates, so double check what you’re likely to need before it comes down to the wire at the end of the year.

Cheers,
Matt.
