Card payment sucharges banned in Australia from 2026

Actually, I'd say most people in this thread are also supporting the removal of surcharges, which is what prompted my comments earlier in the thread.

What it shows is that people really, really, really dislike surcharges — even points collectors will happily trade away points for their removal.

No

Yes I’d agree even on AFF there seems to be a slight majority in favour, though less so than in the general public.

I guess what I was getting at was that this group is a somewhat privileged group who can get some value out of the current arrangements and even then there are plenty happy with the change.

Amongst the general public there are very few who like the current surcharge’s arrangement. They would no doubt see those arguing for no change as selfish/priviledged rather than interested in the interests of the majority.

Those who support this changes, haven't yet realised that it will mean less points earning....

Back to my selfish/priviledged comment then! It is possible to support changes for the benefit of the majority even if not for the benefit of yourself!
I agree entirely. Banning the sneaky surcharge will benefit the majority and keep the ticketed price being the price you pay (not some mathematical variant of what is on the price tag). Hopefully, the next target is the sneaky payment processing fee (seemly ludicrous to charge someone to get their payment). And for business, accepting and processing payments (even if it is outsourced) is just a cost of operating and therefore should be reflected in the price, and not an additional charge.

Only 10% of businesses currently apply a surcharge, while 90% will have reduced costs due to lower interchange fees, so in sum the pressure on prices will be *downward*.

It’s the card issuers who will suffer.
