What I ate today - the food thread

Had the itch for seafood again.

Despite a spectacular coastline and clear blue water… I defy anyone to find fresh seafood anywhere in the Coromandel.

But I digress.

Dinner at the Blue Lagoon Bar and Eatery in Whitianga.

Shared the seafood platter.

The bernaise mussels were great.

And they were happy to do half the fish battered and half grilled keeping everyone happy.

And just to prove I’m still being a responsible parent, Miss H was force fed this. 🤣

About last night...
Despite not really feeling up to, I had a reservation to honour at my favourite place in Hong Kong - Yardbird.

Tempura Corn

Right side: KFC (Korean Fried Cauliflower). Researching this dish led me to Yardbird years ago, and they've still got it!
Front: Brussels Sprouts with black garlic and crispy garlic.
Beverage: (no booze tonight - they do have a reasonable whisky selection)
Shio Suika, watermelon and yuzu.

Finally found a good Thai restaurant for us. Funny name- Love You Long Thai. We started with coconut prawns and chicken satay. It had the largest chicken pieces we have ever had but it was pretty good.

No picture of the prawns. Pretty standard but tasted fine.
Both the mains, chicken pad Thai and Khao Soi were large and very tasty though I would ask for extra chilli if I were to have it again.

Monday night and now a tradition that we have at least one meal at Enbu yakiniku in Bondi Junction. But grandkids all having exams so this time we just had our son for company.
We had an autumn platter of way beef, an extra platter of way skirt beef, pork belly, some veggies and tempura prawns.

I can still enjoy Japanese food without going to Japan. We love it and not bad value. With a bottle of wine it came to $50 a head.

The Marriott Brisbane was the venue for my next lunch. Interesting start when the server dropped a tray of drinks between me and seatmate (and we had just finished a conversation about a previous event when another colleague wore a red wine over his shirt). Thankfully what was spilt this time was a mix of Champagne and sparkling water over my right sleeve, so it dried and couldn’t see anything.

My contrast, a family get together on Mothers Day was a simple fare - pizza, cheese scrolls, garlic bread and Pepsi.

IMG_2334.jpeg

My dad insisted on paying, as he always does - as we were talking about home care for my mum who has Alzheimer’s. My brother, his son, my wife and I are now rostered on for a weekly respite day for the foreseeable future. The joys of getting older - and the surprising capitulation from my 94 yo father who’s a stubborn Irishman and has been insisting he can look after mum by himself.

Sounds like a wonderful man. Great that he is now able to accept your assistance.

Today’s lunch at Whitegrass Singapore.
IMG_0461.jpeg

Two complimentary starters. First a Japanese cheese, Jekyll Island smoked kohlrabi a shellfish and caviar with edamame cream. I liked all but the edamame cream went really well with the caviar.
IMG_0463.jpeg

Then sashimi horse mackerel.
IMG_0466.jpeg

Mrsdrron got a free mocktail for Mother’s Day.

IMG_0464.jpeg

First bread with French butter.
IMG_0465.jpeg

Then lobster with Hokkaido asparagus and morels. Beautiful.
IMG_0467.jpeg

Then the second bread. Nicer than the first.
IMG_0468.jpeg

Then a Japanese fish with sea urchins. I had already started and Mrsdrron doesn’t like sea urchins.
IMG_0469.jpeg

Mains. Maple duck for Mrsdrron and waygu for me. It was beautiful.

IMG_0471.jpeg

There was a palate cleanser of Japanese plum, eggplant and turnip. Thought it was going to be strange but was really good. No photo.
Lychee sorbet was delicious.
IMG_0472.jpeg

Finished with French almond cake and mango and raspberry mochi.

Fantastic meal. Chef came out and talked to us. It is a great fusion between French and Japanese cuisine. The chef grew up around Nara and has worked in France.
Now after paying they brought out this for a lucky draw.

Mrsdrron drew a voucher for their everyday restaurant so will have to try that.
