'Jinxed' Qantas plane replaced by A380

Just a quick question.
747's can fly with only 3 engines in operation.
Why couldn't the 747 just have continued to Sydney? Was there a fuel leak that might have drained all the fuel? Or not enough fuel to get to the final destination?

Yes 747's can fly with only 3 engines

They tend to like to get aircraft which have some form of mechanical fault down onto the ground sooner rather than later. Whilst yes, the fuel leak may be slow enough that there was enough fuel with reserves to still get the plane to Syd. However the other problem you have is what if the hole the fuel is leaking through got bigger enroute and you didn't have the ability to divert to another airport?

There are certainly many cases where planes with fuel leaks have fallen out of the sky.

They can, but not well...

Well enough to climb and pass the airworthiness tests required as part of FAR part 25. Twin engine ops are part of the 747 ratings training from day 1, and more recently total engine out procedures are practiced following the volcanic ash incidents with BA and SQ, both of which from memory were only able to initially restart two engines and continue operations.
 
Maybe... The word lemon would certainly come to mind... :lol:

I fail to see what the big issue is, the way I see it is that plane has a fault, pilots make a decision, plane lands safely at alternative airport in accordance with their training, everyone is fine...

I have to admit, I'm not looking forward to the day that QF makes it's last B747 flight... I prefer them over the A380...
Slightly OT but can I ask - is QF's longterm plan to phase out 744s and replace their entire large aircraft fleet with A380s (whether 800s or 900s)?

I saw a list somewhere (hosted on an enthusiast site, not an official QF page) detailing all twenty-something A380s QF is getting, assuming they don't cancel any.
 
What I'm hearing is that the B747's are going to be phased out in 2013... :(

Hopefully they will bring the B744's onto some shorter routes again (thinking TT) like they did with the B743's so I can fly them frequently until they are phased out. Whilst yes, across to the US is a route I do fly from time to time, I tend to stick more to this side of the world. (Eg CBR - AKL and CBR - PER)
 
HarvyK whilst I would love to see the B744's back on transcon flights, I do not see this occurring.
This may change if the dynamics needs it to change, but I would feel that it is unlikely to happen.:evil:
 
This would be excellent news if it happened to replace the 747 I'm booked on in October - is there any way of ascertaining it's likely schedule - or shall I just keep banging on the flight number link @ MyBookings page?
