I believe it's the Sheraton's Platinum Privilege card that you're after information. I used to be a member, I'll try and dig up web links or details.

It's not as an attractive proposition in Australia given the loss of Sheratons in BNE and MEL (Southgate), that haven't been replaced, as well as AKL. The Hilton Premium Club is another program that I use far more than I did the Sheraton's Platinum Privilege.

I just used the card tonite at Sheraton on the Park in Sydney...had a seafood buffet (including unlimited lobster!!) + glass of wine for 2 for $79

It costs $269 per year.

A Sheraton management person I was chatting to on a flight a couple of weeks ago said they are plans to replace the BNE Sheraton ASAP. Whether this happens or not - we'll wait and see.

I used to have Sheraton Platinum Privilege card, cost me $275/yr, havent had one in 10 years though, but was thinking of getting another one, but sounds like it no longer exists, is that right?
The one I had provided 1/2 price rooms, meals, etc. We used it for our 20th & 25th anniversaries & got a lot of freebies on top of the discounts.

Thanks Benhadi, that certainly seems to be it - although it appears they've drastically slashed the benefits available compared to the original version. Sign of the times I guess, although it doesnt exactly make me want to use their hotels over others - marginal at best.

Most of the similar programs seem to have had some slash and burn done to their benefits over the past few years.

Thanks oz-mark - so how would you rate this card among others?

I no longer do as much travelling as I used to do, so don't have as big a need for such cards as before, but obviously still want to save where I can.

Only keep one c/card nowadays, ANZ Visa. Dumped the Qantas etc, was costing me a bundle compared to the ff benefits. Don't have Citibank anymore either.

The business:leisure ratio of my travel habits has pretty much equalised too.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Rodfly, I have a Starwood Privilege Card, and have had for some years.
Apart from the fact that Starwood have lost hotels in Australia I am very satisfied with the benefits the card provides.

The card itself gives you:

10% off any accommodation rate on the Starwood website.
This includes any pay in advance specials.

50% off food cost when dining, if two people dine.
Equivalent of one meal free if more than two dine.

15% off beverage costs, ie alcohol.

In addition you get a book of coupons on joining. These entitle you to various accommodation and dining specials.
For example a coupon that entitles you to 50% off for 8 people dining.
A friend of mine used this at the Sheraton on the Park buffet to save his group $320.

Currently they have a special where you get a free bottle of wine if dining.

I would not dismiss the card without checking again how it may work for you.

Thanks ric_melb, good info. As I previously held a Sheraton Plat.Priv. card, I'm definitely still interested in the Starwood version, but obviously a lot has changed from the heady days of the '90s when they were all giving great deals, definitely a lot tighter today.

But at the same time keen to look into some others to compare - planning a few trips over the 6 months, including o/s so want to make sure I get whatever benefits are available.

Cos I have a 2hr drive to Tulla, I do miss the old Ansett Golden Wing ...

Rodfly, if you decide to go ahead, ask about the second card. For the past 2 years I have had 2 cards included. The really good thing is the second card does not have to be a family member. So a friend can have the second card, with all the same benefits, except they don't get any "extra" vouchers. If you know someone who wants to join, you could share the cost of membership (so under $140 each), which makes it a good deal IMO.

Cheers snufl, good tip! I have somebody in mind who would likely take up that offer. I just had a call from Starwood explaining all the benefits of the card, special offers, etc. $289/yr, not bad value if you actually use it. Split as you described is even better.

Pity they dont have hotels inland, snowfields would be a good stay on the card, but am planning a fortnight at Port Douglas in November, a week at either coughet or similar early December.

Anyone have any preferences recommendations for either place?

I am not saying it is a bad card, just that they all have been cutback.

The right one for you would be based on which hotels you prefer to use, and reading your posts here, may well be the Sheraton card. Some of the others (e.g. Hilton) don't have programs that go quite as far afield as the Sheraton program either.

I entered my details on their site and got the full run down over the phone with a heavy attempt to get me to buy it then and there.

Summarising, $289 for the year, you know you get 2 cards, probably didn't realise you could get 5 cards for your friends to enjoy 50% off dining for them too, special offers like stay 5 nights, get 2 free.

Other stuff.. list goes on and on.

yeah me too - but find its easy enough to get a return ph number from them & call back at your own convenience. if they refuse I hang up. But I will most likely buy in anyway, as this card has a lot of good benefits, and the $289 is easily defrayed by sharing it around the other cardholders @ $58 each, as you pointed out.
