Just when you thought you had seen it all in the Qantas lounge...

Let me just say this ... when I first arrived in AU, I mistook Vegemite for Nutella. I usually smear two table spoonsful of Nutella on each slice of toast ... I will leave it at that ... I'm sure you can imagine what would have happened next 🤣
Ryan would never make that mistake😂😂

Shredded Wheat is a rival product to Weetabix. It comprises strands of wheat made into bakes rather than the flakes of Weetabix.

Oh right, that does sound much worse.

Couldn't you smell it?
Didn’t think about it … in hindsight I should have .. but I was on the phone with someone and helped myself to the Vegemite from the office pantry … my then boss said that I’ll be ok, it’s just yeast extract etc etc but also said that I can go home if I like 😂 I didn’t go home, however, I became the point of discussion for a few weeks at work 😂

Actually a few years later, I offered one my flatmates who was new to AU to try Vegemite and told him that it was the Aussie version of Nutella 😂😂 poor bugger!

I won't eat Weetbix but fortunately I prefer Vitabrits. They have less sugar, less salt and less calories.
Unfortunately they have been in short supply recently.

oh dear. lol.

you weren't the first, and won't be the last unfortunately.

I remember an American friend who I suggested try it but before I could suggest just s scrape for a newbie (I last the stuff on myself) they treated it like peanut butter and.. well.. the faces pulled and reaction was quite a sight. Suffice to say - not a fan lol.

It's one of those things, like Marmite in the UK and wherever else that we grow up with. I can go nuts with vegemite (like many aussies) that would leave some aghast.. but it's what we're used to and like; but I'd never, EVER, suggest a newbie to it put anything but the smallest amount on bread/toast to try.

Just a few weeks ago I was in the US and had some folks asking me about it and even I admit how gross it SOUNDS when even trying to describe it - "uh well.. it's kinda black like tar, and tastes very salty and uh.. it's a yeast extract..." and they're like I'm talking about food from Mars. I get it!

the notion of those picked herrings and the like that the Scandis like make me cringe (with no offence intended to our Northern european friends) - but that's their Vegemite if you will. A cultural thing.
Back in the 80s I was in a youth hostel in Canada when Men at Work had a hit with a land down under. A girl came and asked me if I could explain what vegemite was and asked was it a sex toy 🤦‍♀️😛

Calories are almost identical (1480 vs 1470), Weetbix does have more sugar (3g vs 0.4g) but Vita Brits has more Sodium (395 vs 270)

They‘re both very healthy cereals. I’m happy with either, I buy weetbix but mostly had Vita Brits growing up. Both are infinitely better than the UK version.

Don't get me started on the terrible UK Weetabix vs the far superior Australian Weetbix.

And yes, the Australian product is the original. There's no texture to the UK version, it's just a soggy mess! And as many Australians are taught, Never Eat Soggy Weetbix.

Agree.

But .... I had a couple of 2 week stints last year in the US (in serviced apartment), and for breakfast was easiest for me to go to supermarket at the start of the stay and get some supplies (cereal, bread, fruit spreads etc). In the supermarket I went to, Weetabix was the only cereal I found that had <20% sugar (a very small %) . Not the same as Weet-bix but a god-send as I hate super sweet sugary cereals, unless the sugar mainly comes from dried fruit).

Margarine? Little messy surely … I would be worried my luggage contents would end up smeared in grease.. vegemite I understand as can be hard to find and a little goes a long way
I always carry Coles/Woolworths plastic bags in my backpack to use when needed.
