We have a flight booked later this year from CGK to Sydney on QF 42 at 20.00.We need to connect with EY20, inbound flight from the UK arriving at 14.35.

Both flights are in J (QF is an award) and I’m WP. Traveling with the family.

5.5 hours seems like it should be plenty of time for the connection. But we have never been to CGK before so not sure what’s involved in transiting, immigration, collecting checked luggage and checking in for the QF flight. Perhaps 5 hours will be cutting it fine?

We can take the safer and longer option of EY 26 from LHR one day earlier, which would give us an extra day in London and arrives at 21.40. Then overnight at a hotel with a nice pool and QF 42 home the next evening.

Following as I'd also like to know about the transit/transfer process in CGK...

I've been through CGK many times. The air-side transit process should be fairly simple and straightforward if you have your on-wards boarding passes.

Just follow the signs. I did it in Bali the other day. CGK should be no different. It looked the same to me when I've been through.

If your trip is one booking, you'll probably get your on-wards boarding passes in London and your luggage should be through-checked. So no need to go land-side.

The hitch might be if you don't have your on-wards boarding passes and the transfers desk handling transits to QF is not yet open. That might mean a wait.

If, for some reason, you really have to go land-side, to collect luggage and check-in again (you'll probably have to pay for a Visa on Arrival and go through the whole process), at CGK it probably won't take too long.

It's been much better than Bali IME.

That’s the problem, seperate bookings, different airlines. There’s no way we’d be able to get our QF boarding passes until we arrive.

That might change things.

Still, if your bags can be checked through, you'd only need to get your QF boarding passes (if eg online check-in can't be done) at the air-side transfers desk in CGK. Not sure how early you can do that.
