Wearing masks on long-haul flights

Has anyone had the experience of long haul with masks? How does sleeping feel through the night? [edit] I'm in favour of masks - just curious about the experience.

I have seen reports that some airlines provide for multiple disposable masks on long haul flights.

Personally I find the general disposable masks with thickish low strength elastic are the more comfortable.

I slept easily enough on the red eye from Darwin to Melbourne (In business). Not long haul, but i’d happily do it.

If it’s of concern, you could give it a crack at home One night.

Not sure about now but in the early days on Qatar you not only had to wear masks but also the face shield. My son looked like Darth Vader on his from Adelaide to UK.

It could also be just cultural, I have flown into, out of or through many Asian airports where masks were worn by PAX in the pre covid world.

Some airlines, like CX, are allowing premium pax to take masks off in the lie flat position to sleep given the relative privacy and space in J and specially F (where it exists). This seems sensible.

QR allowed J pax to sleep without them back October last year. Son was very pleased I'd splurged on award booking for him in J solely because of this allowance. Being in a Q suite he could take advantage of blocking himself in and relaxing a bit more.

So I find the biggest problem wearing masks is not the breathing, but the elastic straps. Finding a mask with comfortable straps is the most important bit IMHO. Now I don't /can't wear eye masks on planes for this very reason - I find the elastic straps quite uncomfortable. I'm guessing if you are OK with eye mask, face mask is probably OK. I did wear face masks for the duration of three overnight - 7hr-ish - flights last year, and TBH, it didn't really worry me at all, but had to find the right mask for comfort. These were in economy, but all three were in lie flat configurations (i.e. I laid down across 3 seats).

And for the Y flyers get someone to hold a board 3 inches from your face, someone else to nudge you in the back and bring all the television screens you can into the bedroom

I found the idea far worse then the reality. Tip- travel with several. Disposable are best as you toss and replace. Some airlines don’t allow cloth. I found the K94 to be terrible on the ground but was great in the air.

I’ve done a few international long hauls with masks on. Without a doubt it is not inspiring wearing a mask for 46 hours, but the opportunity to take it off while eating or drinking is relief. I tend to linger over a drink. In J the enforcement varies by airline (QR hardly at all, LH rigorous). Sleeping with a face mask no more bizarre than sleeping with an eye mask. I use my own cloth mask unless airline requires a surgical one.
