Australian state border restrictions

Seriously, no. Just very worried that they may stop me at Melbourne airport and fine me 5K+ and sent me back to Sydney

Ahh … well yes, you are right to be worried.

That’s exactly what they’ll do and/or put you in 14 day hotel quarantine.

Unless you’re an exempted essential traveller, that proposed trip would have you sent back straight away (best case).

The WA Premier said the border would not immediately open to NSW and Victoria once vaccination targets were achieved.

"What we have said is between 80-90 per cent and at that point in time we would set a date," he said.

"That may be two months from then."

He has said numerous times that it won’t be this year
A direct quote from dear leader McGowan....

“My advice would be don’t do that (fly overseas) unless you want to spend a lot of time in Paris or NSW"

Oh the humanity!

Quote from our Prime Minister: ""If you travel from interstate, out of Sydney, you will have to be aware that your state may not let you back in," Mr Morrison said."
I had to double check on two sites to verify that this is apparently what the leader of our country stated. Nothing about; "it is ridiculous that you can travel the world but can't travel within your own country"? Simply "your State may not let you back in"?!
I should qualify my post to say that it is not political. I despise all party politicians with equal fervour but in a discussion on border restrictions it is sometimes necessary to gently touch upon the Federal/State question?

Is that in the context of say a WA resident leaving via Sydney for overseas and trying to get home to WA?

He doesn't need the rhetoric to be any sharper. Time will do that for him.

Yes, actually. And I've read the HC judgment.
Except that since that judgement the medical facts have changed. There are now vaccines and more established treatment so how do you suppose the case will go now.
On top of that the Commonweath had an order under the Biosecurity Act closing our borders. Some time in November that will be removed. The WA case would then be totally undermined.

I'm a Tasmanian resident, but that's how I take it. We have no international airport, so I fly to Sydney, head off and travel the globe but when I fly back to Sydney, I can't go home. Not "go home and quarantine", simply can't go home.
Currently, that's exactly how it is for a Tasmanian in NSW trying to get home. Best chance is a compassionate exemption but it still involves fourteen days hotel quarantine and they'll let you know when there's a vacancy in a hotel. Anyone else, forget it. These issues need to be sorted out as a matter of priority, way ahead of announcing "we're opening international borders".

Best that you speak to your Premier then.

NSW will welcome you back, as we have done throughout the pandemic to the best of our ability, more than the rest of the nation combined at some points, at risk to ourselves.

We will let you stay in a hotel or airbnb, and make sure you get to the gate at T2 or T3. After that appears to be your problem to resolve.

For those of us who live in NSW, we will go home, order home delivery groceries and meals, recover from jet lag and then do some work from home for a few days and then be back to normal.

Fair comment and be sure I'm acting on your advice!

The announcement today was obviously devoid of details.

Just supposing for a moment that all the states have opened up. Qantas only flies from Sydney and Melbourne to London. How can people from outside those two cities take advantage of this arrangement? You'd still need to take a domestic flight after your international flight. But that potentially exposes people on the domestic flights as you won't have even started your quarantine yet.

One would guess that in the interim they would be required to do their quarantine in the city of arrival.

While the limits on being able to leave and come back may be being removed, I expect that international travel is going to have a host of challenges for at least 6 months if not more. One of those may be getting back into your home state.

Sadly, yes you are right. I was due to travel in November and I honestly told myself that I’m not cancelling this one, but SQ has already cancelled my inbound and I don’t have the energy to fight it anymore. I hate not agreeing to be one of the test cases, but hopefully there are plenty open to test the waters.

If this drama continues come March…. it may well be a one way ticket out.

I am not as worried. There is obviously going to be a High court challenge to the closed State borders. And with vaccines and better treatment available plus the National border being reopened some time in November I think the chances are it will succeed.

The problem though is that the States will set their own quarantine standards.I would think that in WA and possibly QLD that will remain HQ.For Tasmania I would hope they let their own residents to home quarantine but us naughty mainlanders will have to do HQ as I am presuming cases will be high in all states by then.

Yes because they could never put them back on

They could although unlikely to happen given McGowan is on record saying he doesnt expect to open to NSW, ACT and Vic this year.

Easier to go to and from LAX than PER for a Sydneysider.
