Australian state border restrictions

Here we go… no problem with standing.

“ Tourism giant Flight Centre is prepared to mount a legal challenge against internal border closures if Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia do not reveal “reasonable” plans to rejoin the nation in coming weeks, accusing the states of costing the company $100m a month.”

A couple of questions which I cannot find specific answers to....
If I am flying into Melbourne from Greater Sydney in the morning and flying out in the evening back to Sydney, I will need to apply for a Travel Permit from Services Victoria.
  1. Question is what category of permit do I apply for? I applied for a Transit permit as it says that the stay is no more than 24 hrs. It was granted almost immediately. I am now worried that I may have applied the wrong one as I am not really transiting to another place?
  2. And I do need to do the NSW travel declaration coming back to Sydney?

Ummm…. is this a joke?

Maybe but I doubt it. Hurriedly implemented, uncoordinated, poorly thought out border rules are the norm is this 'country' of Australia at the moment.

More on the Flight Centre led challenge in the HCA, looks like there'll be multiple litigants on board:

"Australian Chamber of Tourism chairman John Hart also confirmed on Thursday that Flight Centre’s legal challenge would have support from a number of other businesses.

“The time is fast approaching for a challenge and we’re aware of a number of businesses among our membership that are preparing for such a challenge,” he said. “From the information we have received, we believe the challenge has significant merit and legal basis.”

From my perspective the challenge should be led by other than Flight Centre to give it more credibility.

To be honest flight centre has plenty of credibility and plenty of standing. They're a pretty trusted brand.

Scroo also knows how to argue his case in the court of public opinion which will be just as important.

If it's a class action even better. Just so long as it's not Clive as it'll be about Clive rather than the matter at hand.

It has lost a huge amount of credibility in the eyes of many. Just look at the "Travel Industry issues" group on FB to see the number of complaints about them. There are quite a few who are worse but they are certainly in the rankings.

This may well win them back if they get the country open.

Cool, so who have you lined up in your mind who has the will and way to take on this mess?

The threat alone should get certain people thinking more carefully, hopefully.

Not sure what you will be doing in Melbourne but I don’t think a transit permit is appropriate? You are only allowed to go to accomodation and buy food whilst “transiting“

No one from my perspective. I haven't used FC for a very long time and have no plans to use them ever again.

Exactly. Which is why someone has to do it.

The airlines, hotel industry association, tourism bodies should have more sway than a travel agency which few people use.

Flight centre will have nothing to sell if there aren't flights to take, hotels to stay in, tour to do etc

I don't think Flight Centre have much to sell now.

It will all come down to whether they can mount a successful legal argument. Nothing to do with public sentiment about their business practices.

From The Australian, there's a number of other tourism related businesses that will join as well, it won't be Scroo by himself. The Tourism Industry Association said as much.

Qantas should do it. They wouldn't need a legal challenge, just threaten to revoke every politicians CL membership and life time perks. It'd be sorted in 24 hours!
Apparently they've cancelled a swag of memberships recently, it was in the finance section of SMH. Perhaps there's some more people who need to get the letter...
