Virgin Blue paying cash for their fuel?

I was not insinuating they are paying cash for their fuel, I was simply asking the question.

I now know the rumour is not true.

Perhaps a lesson to post this stuff from home in future rather than from a Qantas desk!

It's refreshing to find a Qantas employee bagging an airline other than Qantas!

Like - have you forgotten to switch your bullsh*t filter on? How many suitcases stuffed full of notes would it take to fuel up a jet? There ain't a snowballs chance in hell anyone that big pays cash for fuel, or any airline gives that much cash to anyone to pay for it, or any fuel company allows employees to accept that much cash for anything.

Methinks you've been sniffing a tad too much Jet-A recently :-)

A friend of mine who works at Brisbane airport advised that Virgin Blue are having to pay cash by fuel. This is not good news if they are.

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks NM. It is a timely reminder to take everything you read in forums with a huge grain of salt. I even take what I write with a huge grain of salt. I suspect that there are others in addition to the OP in a similar situation. Maybe they post from home. I also hope this is an instance of an enthusiastic amateur rather than a concerted viral marketing campaign sanctioned from on high. If it is it will end in tears. In a cruise forum I participate one shipping line in the last few weeks was secretly offering forum members inducements to say nice things about the product and attack the opposition. If it comes to that these forums are of almost no value as places to exchange information and learn.

Cash for <whatever> usually means a EFT transaction before release. I have a customer from Indo who's not on good terms with a US based supplyer of oil, they must EFT before product is released from bottany. THis is a product worth $2.85 per l and they buy quantities in excess of 80K l at a time in ISO tankers. The EFT sum is huge!

Welcome to AFF, cnd.

Without reflecting on the fact that the rumour has no basis in fact, I should point out that paying in cash does not necessarily mean handing over bundles of notes.

I once worked for a company that was perpetually in trouble with its suppliers and terms of payment were cash. All we had to do was have a cheque ready when the goods were delivered. That is, we were not allowed any credit.

If it's the one I'm thinking of there were no inducements to say nice things, just an offer of recognition, but no requirements to say nice things or attack the opposition and for many no benefits at all (aside from some separate contact).

That's quite different from this case of a paid employee.

Obviously a quiet day for Ben.... Nothing better to write about!

Personally i think his knowledge of the Web is about as good as his knowledge of Aviation....

I had linked this rumour with other media stories of VirginBlue getting in late with fuel hedging last year. Therefore paying cash/EFT may be cheaper now then their hedged fuel contract.

This rumour doesn't jump out as false straight away and may be a real comment between staff said in a joking manner.

Yeah, agreed, its easy to think that a suit case full of green backs handed over to the BP man before filling up would indicate anything apart from financial crisis, however, as you have rightfully pointed out, it may well be an economic decision on DJ's part...

I don't know what you are thinking of but the one I am referring to is Royal Caribbean. Of course I only have second hand knowledge. While there is no evidence, to my knowledge, that employees were involved in postings there certainly are claims of inducements to forum members in the form of trips, attendance at "seminars". Of course, they didn't have to say nice things but it sure helped. It is different from here but my point was that the credibility of any forum is severely damaged if there is andetected and concerted effort by a commercial organisation by hidden inducement to influence opinion in favour of their product or against the opposition. I don't think that it is difference in substance whether that programme uses employees or public stooges. Given the nature of this forum I don't think "bribes" to forum members are likely to work (though AJ, an F trip to London foc will help me say nice things about Qantas ).

So I am pleased that NM raises the issue but, to date, it essentially still remain unanswered by the OP.
