I do feel, as one of the same group, that we are now being limited to the least good vaccine, but are the most vulnerable citizens.

The thinking needs to change, or perhaps no one cares. Saves money with pensions...
There is no, inferiority, none, zero.

Anyone who is vulnerable should get vaccinated now.

Having 2 doses of either vaccine reduces your chances of dying to 1/20th of those waiting for Pfizer/ Unvaccinated.
Don’t wait, covid won’t.
The other thing is that both AZ and Pfizer have around 30% efficacy vs Delta with one shot. And if the manufacturer's recommended dosage intervals are maintained then anyone who gets AZ has to wait 12 weeks to get 70% efficacy. And many people have died with one dose.

Isn't it more expedient to just fast track these people with Pfizer at 3 weeks? Give them 90% efficacy, stop the deaths? There aren't THAT many left in the grand scheme of things.

Have a look at AP's FB page and see how many are cheering her on at keeping us safe from this deadly disease. Making Delta less deadly will cut her fan base way down and force her to keep to the 80% opening schedule which is (for most AFFers) the end game. She is trying to please QLDers who are panicking at people dying from Covid. They were on the verge of locking down again today.
All states with outbreaks have reduced the AZ second dose to 6-8 weeks and in the case of Victoria it’s 6 weeks for both Pfizer and AZ.
QLD is extremely vulnerable to a covid outbreak and anyone who hasn’t had a single dose of either vaccine should get one now.
In the event of an outbreak QLD will likewise reduce / alter the dosing.
There’s no advantage to waiting.

I don't agree with monkeying around with the manufacturer's recommended dosages. Didn't the UK tray that? And now despite a high % of vaxxed, they are still copping a lot of deaths.

Carried away - move everything from 9727 to the vaccine begun thread?
I very clearly tied the relevance of vaccines in older demographic to borders opening. Please leave the thread alone.

Well ATAGI and the Chief Medical Officer disagree with that opinion.

And there are various countries including Malaysia, UK, Canada that have shortened duration of dosing in outbreaks to increase the amount of people fully vaccinated.
I am not aware of any data showing that this has led to increased deaths in fact the opposite.

Though the evidence coming out from the UK in particular suggests they are being forced to have the vaccine whose effectiveness lasts longer.

AZ may well end up being a better vaccine as it seems it lasts longer. Saying Pfizer is the better vaxx really just isn’t true.

having said that, I tend to agree that the most pragmatic thing is to open up all
vaccines to all (approved) age groups. Eye on the prize, there’s been too much focus on blaming/punishing various groups in australia and id like to just get through it all ASAP.

Sorry but if this is how you have drawn your conclusions then you are completely and utterly wrong.

Follow the medical advice from the relevant Departments of Health in Australia.

So in my Bird in Hand winery fun this Arvo, someone called me out for having the 'Vaccinated' icon in my FB avatar. So I checked on their profile and there, proudly, is their title page for United Australia Party. I posted that I completely understood their frustration because I felt the same when I saw the United Australia logo in the FB profile. Within seconds their post to me was pulled down. Honestly, some people are so silly and naive.

If they are waiting for Pfizer, they fit the definition pretty well.
and some of them just don't like being given no choice/being told what to do. I got the AZ - pretty much ran there as soon as eligible. My husband bristled so much at being told that he had to get the AZ. When he became eligible for Pfizer, he booked in days later. He has said over & over, he would have gone for the AZ based on availability but for the fact he felt forced into it.

You can only imagine how well it goes over when I tell him to do something....

14,000 AZ appointments booked today in Vic because the interval time was halved. So a few less idiots around :)
I also think because of they way they structured the "freedom" target being contingent on having 1 doese (freedom being able to travel 10k from your home - insert eye roll), they intentionally albeit indirectly, put pressure on people to take up the AZ appointments

Well, funny you say that - the UK went against the manufacturer and spaced the vaccines at 12 weeks apart.

He was widely criticised for it, for going against the sacred health advice.

And as it turned out, 12 weeks led to a higher efficacy, and subsequently became the norm.

However, when you have AZ sitting idle like we do, easy to go for quick benefit now and we can worry about boosters later.

Latest National Cabinet Statement: National Cabinet Statement | Prime Minister of Australia

The rollout was discussed, the reopening plan triggered by meeting vaccination targets and the rollout in indigenous communities.

They don’t intend to meet again for two weeks so probably no major announcements of any national decisions in the next few weeks other than if they are able to bring forward even more doses.

Nice work Victoria!
(Meanwhile up here in QLD *crickets*… sigh

Victoria just a fortnight from extra freedoms due to high vaccination numbers

Victoria is just a fortnight from additional freedoms, with new data showing the state is only 14 days away from reaching 70 per cent first COVID-19 doses for the eligible population.

The vaccination target could now be reached as early as September 18, if Victorians continue to get jabbed at the pace with which the state’s vaccine rollout has progressed over the past seven days.

Health authorities said earlier this week they expected the vaccination target could be achieved by September 23.

So those that think that you should believe Pfizer's advice and space the 2 jabs 3 weeks apart please supply the evidence for that being the correct spacing.
In fact it is only because that is what was used in the Phase 3 trials. The UK and Canada ran real life situations and tried different spacings out of necessity. The results were the same.
So one manufacturer believed the evidence and changed their gap from 3 to 12 weeks.
Another manufacturer decided not to believe the evidence.

Now if you believe that the UK is paying the price of using a longer interval between jabs why not compare to a country with similiar vaccination percentages but stuck to 3 weeks -Israel.
So in the last 7 days Israel has had ~ 67000 cases and 175 deaths.

The UK looks worse with the last 7 days having 236152 cases and 777 deaths.
However it has 8 times the population of Israel so adjusting the Israel figures to the UK population their numbers become ~636000 cases and 1400 deaths.

You have stated one level of facts, but other level of facts would include:

- when did X reach Y% of vaccination? I think Israel reached most vaccination levels earlier and there has been some evidence of protection waning.
- do both have similar lockdown, social distancing (eg masks, density) and border restrictions?
- what proportion of cases are in vaccinated and unvaccinated?
- the mix of Pfizer v other vaccines in the community?
- deaths is a lagging indicator usually.

I'm sure there are possibly other factors.

With the Singapore doses coming and then the UK doses one would hope the vaccine pace would pick up above what it is now.

But let's say we reach 70% first dose on September 18 we could then reach 80% early October(?) meaning with a 6 week gap between Pfizer and AZ doses you'd be looking at early to mid November for 80% fully vaccinated and even sooner if the gap between Pfizer doses can be shortened back down to the 3 weeks. The end of October for 80% fully vaccinated in Victoria seems to be a real possibility now.

Pension? Bears no relevance. The whole world stopped to ensure the older and vulnerable were protected as much as possible. Kids lost two years of proper education. It's about time we paid back a little of that debt by just getting vaccinated with whatever you are offered. I don't feel the least bit compromised in having AZ but medically I could have had Pfizer.
I really do feel that not enough attention has been paid to the sacrifices of the younger cohorts (even if not voluntary) to keep the older cohorts safe. When I see people around my bage complaining that they cannot get pfizer I feel (personally) that it is so selfish.

I rushed out to get AZ as soon as I could, and so did my wife. But neither of us could do it quickly enough to beat our 40yo daughter to be fully vaccinated with AZ. And this is the key point, a 40yo who was prepared to take AZ asap to keep herself, but in reality much older cohorts, safe.
