If you don't fly, and still pay for planes, losses happen.
Don't think it was unexpected.

Other threads talking more about the future plans.

Details from QF here for anyone interested:
As expected, Qantas Loyalty and the freight division did reasonably well.

Qantas domestic yields (i.e. airfares) increased, but CASK increased a lot more than RASK did, due to loss of economy of scale with far fewer flights running.

Jetstar (AU domestic) achieved a 33% growth in ancillary revenue per passenger compared to 2019, which is quite impressive. Perhaps everyone started buying FareCredits?

Interesting excerpt from the QF media release:

  • Qantas’ ability to fly non-stop between Australia and London is expected to be in even higher demand post-COVID. The airline is investigating using Darwin as a transit point, which has been Qantas’ main entry for repatriation flights, as an alternative (or in addition) to its existing Perth hub given conservative border policies in Western Australia. Discussions on this option are continuing.

I would love Joyce to use DRW to McGowan like he did the threat of a BNE HQ relocation to Berejiklian. That would be a fight to see.

What wasn’t in the financials or media release were the details of the planned Darwin F lounge.

But in an AFF exclusive, here is an artist impression of what it will look like:

I would stand in the rain on the tarmac if I had to, and I don’t think I’d be the only one, if it meant out.

He already did - the deal to get the Perth connections in the first place was on the condition that the WA Government had to upgrade the domestic QF terminal which came in for more than $15M. I doubt he would get a similar repsonse again...

The AFR had an interesting graph today. I'm quite suprsied the 2020 costs were really high and the article estimates by 2023 things would start to improve.
