Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Still quite a lot of cases in regional NSW, hard to see the statewide lockdown not being extended.

I think it is too early to call if it will go beyond the current date of 30th September, if vax rates keep up we should be at 70% by then so would not expect to be under the lockdown we are now.

Oh dear, yet another state locking its residents out from their home, families, jobs, lives. We have sunk so very low, it’s hard to see how our society will ever recover. I am so disillusioned to realise that the Australia I loved and served proudly in the ADF is not real, and tht the Australian people as represented by their elected politicians are a bunch of fearful NIMBYs with no compassion or empathy.
Let's just know that the Australia all of us know is exactly the same as it's always been, fun loving, free & full of beautiful places to visit.

It's just the darn pollies, especially those head nuff nuffs in charge at state level (and some CHO's) that have made a good mess of this great country Australia, but nothing that won't go back to as it was (bar more border control) over time. IMO of course.

My wish list for faxed privileges is also simple. For fully vaxxed people to be able to visit fully vaxxed family members or friends either in the home or elsewhere over a coffee.

Sounds good in theory ..... But how can it be enforced? How can the authorities ensure that only fully vaxxed family members can visit other fully vaxxed members in their homes?

The only way they can control this is via public places where there are QR code controls etc.

I for one think we should open up licensed clubs. You can meet up in the outdoor gaming room. Being NSW you know this makes sense.

I wonder what they will give back to fully vaccinated people. Perhaps more time outside? More mobility? Hair cut for fully vaccinated?

NSW crisis meeting to decide easing of restrictions

The NSW government is set to hold a crisis cabinet meeting today to decide which restrictions will ease now that the state has reached six million vaccinations.

Definitely hair cuts!

Dr Lucy Morgan (respiratory specialist in Western Sydney) is explaining what people feel when they get covid. It’s a little disturbing. She said her intent is that people transfer their anxiety of getting the vaccine to anxiety of getting covid.
I think it’s exactly what we need, there seems to be a concerted effort in NSW to get medical specialists to the press conference to educate and raise awareness of the benefits of vaccination (and the implications of not being vaccinated).

That's right, any places that can be controlled by QR codes and supervision should be allowed to open to fully vaxxed people. We can never enforce this at home.

The question is though, what about children? They are not yet approved for vaccination and also not anytime soon.

Yes, it is definitely a step in the right direction.

Ironically when the case number reaches 1000+, it will probably push even more people psychologically to get themselves vaccinated.

This is the outbreak Australia needed to have, to be brutally frank and with the greatest sympathies to those who have passed.

The reality check for the hermit states of WA and Queensland is NZ where one leak from HQ has led to 63 cases today and 210 in total and a crippling stage 4 lockdown with no end in sight. Hard and fast lockdowns simply dont work as they're no longer "fast".

Vic Presser:

Foley

  • 45 local acquired cases.
  • 36 linked
  • 9 under investigation
36 in hospital, 9 in ICU, 7 on ventilators :(

Record number of vaccinations yesterday through the State Hubs.

As of today at state hubs for general vaccination bookings:
  • 16-17 Pfizer
  • 18-59 Pfizer or AZ
  • 60 + AZ
Kate Matson

About 20 unlinked cases are expected to be linked today.

The 9 unlinked cases of today are from a range of areas including Hobsons Bay, Hume, Melton, Wyndham, Maribyrnong, Monash and Glen Eira

Unlinked cases in this outbreak: These have had an average of 3 days infectious in the community. Some have been a week.

They can easily register households where everyone is fully vaccinated, increase fines if you are found to have breached. During NB lockdown, household gatherings in the southern NB were allowed on Xmas and Boxing Day provided you stayed in the backyard, so there is a precedent.

The question is though, what about children? They are not yet approved for vaccination and also not anytime soon.

Many would love a child free dining experience ;)

Its pretty simple, you mandate that under 16s can only attend outdoor dining and outdoor recreation venues and only if accompanied by a vaccinated adult. If ID is checked and they are found to be eligible (i.e. 16) then fines apply. At larger venues it would make sense to have separate sections for fully vaxed adult only groups vs higher risk groups with children.

With the focus transitioning to monitoring adverse health outcomes rather than primarily new cases, this is probably become the more relevant table to monitor.

Deputy Premier was asked a question, apparently Tweed MP has told people the statewide lockdown would be extended for 6 weeks.

He said it still hasn’t been decided, but then recited a list of reasons why the regional situation is not good - so make of that what you will.

6 weeks would take us to the Labour Day weekend. At least we’ll have daylight saving when we finally get out. But it would also take us to 3 weeks after the state gets to 80% single jab which should be a much better situation.

The statewide lockdown is due to end this Saturday. Only Sydney was extended so far.

ABC news: ACT records nine new COVID-19 cases

Jumping across to the ACT update - the territory has recorded nine new locally acquired COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of cases in the territory’s outbreak to 176.

Only three of the new cases were in quarantine for their entire infectious period.

Eight of the new cases are linked to other known cases or exposure sites.

Seven people with the virus are in hospital, with one in intensive care in critical condition.

We must be much much better at treating COVID, as in the very early days of COVID in NYC I recall NY Governor stating once sick people get so bad they need to go on a ventilator that is often a death sentence.

Yes treatment is now better. Much more is now known.

But NYC back then was an overwhelmed system with many people seeking treatment too late. Plus many patients were having to be treated in not the best conditions. So back then, and there, is not really that relevant to Australia now.

Indeed, there are also a number of deaths in the current outbreak that could have been avoided if people had sought medical attention when they should have, including one yesterday who was offered Special Health Accommodation and declined.

Well back then there also wasnt a free vaccine, there is now and the people in the ICU are not fully vaccinated. Hospitalisations numbers do not tell the full story when you fail to call out how many of those people have been eligible for a vaccine. The real numbers to be concerned about (those ineligible for a vaccine) are far far lower.

Indeed, there is a number of deaths in the current outbreak that could have been avoided if people had sought medical attention when they should have, including one yesterday who was offered Special Health Accommodation and declined.

That was the 30yo who died, poor choice.
