Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

May have to look for the Gomas then, I thought Cirillo Ancestor Vines was really good.
afaik Gomas was only made in 2015

Where was my advice? I feel like your posts have rapidly propelled spending 🤪
but hopefully spending better? :)

you could try just buying focussed/thematic mixed six-packs each month as i suggested to @Mynameislucluc

I think this is really useful experience and advice - over the past two years, I think we have drastically scaled our wine purchases, variety of drinking, knowledge etc. What has been a recent realisation is a lot of the bottles we acquired early on are unlikely to be drunk (which isn't even that long ago). Even recent purchases are likely to be neglected, though I have also moved significantly from a target acquisition cost of 30 p/b.

Seems like many hobbies of mine, focused/intense interest phase leads to excess, which ends up being scaled back to more moderate levels? For wine it seems like many seem to keep reaching for the next lofty height - doesn't seem sustainable for us at least.
it's simple - 4 factors:
  • storage volume
  • buying volume
  • consumption volume
  • spending value
assuming fixed capacity, storage will decrease when buying more than is being consumed, which means that if spending remains constant, then bottle unit costs will increase, since there is less room left to keep future new purchases, and so over time more expensive wines are acquired that inevitably replace cheaper ones :)

Agree there’s nothing wrong with buying heaps of wine, if you have a plan what to do with it.
don't need to have a plan - just need space :)

Reminds me of an interesting conversation with the operations manager of a big storage facility I use saying he’s constantly amazed by how many people pass away leaving behind so much expensive old wine (which they may or may not bought cheap back then but what difference does it make).
did he also say what happens to all their wine after they pass?

It is a depressing reality that as one's purchasing capacity expands , the consumptive capacity recedes…
as above, if you drink less, then buy better :)

Trying some Jura tonight - would drink more except for an entree level curvee it is already $$$.
$71.40 (after 15% off) is $$$? not worth it?

So… Dry July.
Maybe next year ;)

This “dry” Shiraz I’m having tonight is not bad :)

i still have mine - for how long did you decant it? much life left?

Thanks. See if I can get it through audible 30 day trial.
You can also listen to the Conversations episode.

or see/hear/watch him live - and more

I think we are all drinking better thanks to your deals, Ms. B does not consider whether spending is better or not (as I save more not spending at all).

Rather than buying thematic/mixed six-pack, I think we tend to drink in thematic or pairs but purchase where we see a good deal. However, narrowing the focus rather than trying everything now that we have a better gauge should help with spend and acquisition (i.e. on-going yearly list has already been tightened).

Worth or value probably comes back to another post you made previously. Am I glad we purchased? Yes I am (different deal same vendor), but would I repurchase? Probably not, as I think I can get similar profiles and enjoyment from Pat Sullivan (minus some acid) for cheaper.

Decanted for two hours, drank over four hours roughly. Seems to be at it’s peak I’d say drink sooner rather than later.

did he also say what happens to all their wine after they pass?

I did ask and he said that in many cases family members don’t share the same enthusiasm towards wine as the deceased but he didn’t elaborate.

This is the easy part, just pay for managed storage and you’ll get unlimited space :) The hard part is the ability to restrain from buying more than one can drink in their lifespan.

How did you find the chocolate block, looks like '18?

Yes it was the '18. It was well regarded by the group and I liked it. Black fruit, herbs, black tea on the nose. Med+ tannins and balanced acid. Dark fruit on the palate with decent length.

Where did you purchase the RSA wines? We visited La Motte, Moreson andGrand Provence a few years ago and were very impressed, would love to get some for the cellar.
Copper and Oak in Tuart Hill have RSA wines (amongst others)

The Reyneke and La Motte were purchased at the cellar door by yours truly. I knwo some of the Reyneke wines are imported into Australia. The Pinotage came from the Re Store in Leederville and I can't recall exactly, but one came from Dan's and another from Gangemi's in West Perth and pretty sure Copper & Oak for another.

As @baiden said. They probably have the best selection in Perth.

What really makes you cry though is knowing what one would pay in RSA and seeing what it costs here. Local wine is incredibly cheap in RSA.

Yep. The quality for the price over there was fantastic. Not to mention some very scenic cellar doors.
Now you are both making me long for another visit to that beautiful region.
Agree re the pricing, too. We would often find ourselves checking to make sure that we had not misheard of misread the price. :)

So true. The amount of history packed in some of those wineries is incredible. We were blown away by the hospitality, quality of wines and off course the price :)
