Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Was off team Dan over the arrivals cut, now back on team Dan because he said this:

To put it another way – anyone, everyone who wants to be vaccinated has been given an opportunity to do that. And then that’s on them if they don’t choose to get vaccinated. Well, we wouldn’t be having lockdowns to protect people who weren’t prepared to protect themselves.”

Exactly how it should be (and I too am not a fan - but, to be fair, I'm not a fan of any politician right now).

Now apply the same to borders opening.

McGowan said the same thing a few months ago, so there is hope.......................................just won't see fruit from it until early to mid 2022 that's all.

Not happy with Dan and Anna this morning. Respectively calling for 75% and 50% cut in international arrivals. Shocking.

Although I tend to agree with Qld, they probably need a cut (temporarily) to get their S*(@#t together, but Victoria seems to be doing much better on HQ now, having gone through the pain of last year and the Holiday Inn outbreak this year.
Qld spelt out the details - they do not have enough rooms now that 'essential travellers' from NSW, NT & WA must use hotel quarantine.

Seems quite logical & based on facts not spin.

There are only so many rooms that can be used and now with multiple states with hot spots - there's too much domestic demand.

And what is the probability that one of the 8* or so people this otherwise-healthy 18yo might infect will have severe and long-lasting health issues as a result of yet another infection cluster. Yes indeed the otherwise-healthy 18yo might be at very low risk of experiencing severe symptoms/illness, but others in their household, workplace, or casual contacts might not be so "otherwise-healthy".

Death, while certainly severe, is not the only adverse outcome from COVID-19. Many people who are statistically included in the "recovered" category (they no longer test positive) will have long-lasting and in some cases lifetime complications.

* based on current reporting that the Delta strain appears to be very contagious and average cross-infection rates of around 8 people per case are common when an infection case is not in quarantine.
Exactly. The healthy 18 year old if he does get covid is quite likely to be asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms so unlikely to go for testing. However what if he visits his elderly grandparents on a regular basis and they then get covid and die.
Not only the 2 deaths but your heathy 18 year old is very likely to feel guilt and remorse and so continue to suffer for some time.

McGowan did a little rant on repeat arrival numbers, he is in the same camp as Dana nd Anna in wanting to significantly reduce arrivals, even though he already halved WAs earlier this year.

From ABC blog:

"We've done our utmost to make hotels as safe as possible, but there's still that risk," he said.

"One of the problems ... is so many Australians have gone overseas in the course of the last 18 months unnecessarily.

"People book a conference somewhere in Europe then have a holiday while they're over there, then come back and join the queue. It's just not right."

He says in WA, since March 2020, 51,000 people have gone through hotel quarantine, but:

1,308 have been through twice
506 have been through three times
82 have been through four times
Eight have been through five times
Two have been through six times

Is Qld the only state to have hotel quarantine for domestic travellers? Might be a clue.

Very few in Australia under 30 have had the Pfizer vaccine yet

We will wait for the numbers.

But will bet that more under 40s have had Pfizer than AZ up to end of last week because the majority of under 40s that have been eligible to be vaccinated up until this week have been front line workers, people with certain illnesses and disabilities and indigenous people - and those categories have been eligible for Pfizer (unless they didn't have a medicare card).

There are many many airport workers, HQ workers (security guards, cleaners, drivers), hospital workers (nurses, orderlies, cleaners, admin, doctors) who are under 40 and got Pfizer in 1a and 1b, some of those have to be male.

Nope Victoria has forced arrivals from Red zones into HQ before. No idea if those are the same hotels as internationals use though.

And Tom Hanks and his wife have been in and out a few times, even bringing Covid with him, but I don't hear any squeaks about that.

Ah but celebrities and ports people get special treatment.

Adam Hills has come and gone at least 3 times by my count (although never via WA).

But how could you holiday in Europe! It’s a covid cesspit. People are dying in the streets! It’s dangerous! Where on else would you rather be than Australia! Nowhere is safe!

Oh…. Wait

GEEZ, WOULDN'T WANT TO BE THERE

Not sure about the allocation of seats etc. on standard airlines, but my understanding re: celebrities is that they are either flying private/flying first (not bumped) and making arrangements for government approved home quarantine and thus not taking spots from regular folks.

There may be many who would like to do this, at own cost, but not given the chance.
I would imagine they could - at their own cost. I agree that one's "name" being the deciding factor is wrong. If it is about having the means to not use up a spot "in the system", such pathway should be available to all who have the money and choose to spend it that way. Because I am not one of those people, I haven't had the need to explore this :) - but it would be interesting to find out.

This is true in some cases, but Adam Hills (Comedian who host a tv show in UK) has come and gone at least 3 times, via regular HQ. Another who did HQ was Kylie Minogue.

That does seem wrong on its face. I belong to a few Americans in Australia groups and there are so many sad stories around people (dual citizens who live in Australia for the most part) who couldn't visit ailing loved ones or support family members who really needed them back in America temporarily.

Adam and Kylie have the advantage of being non-resident Australian citizens.

As non residents they don't have to apply for permission to leave.

As Australian Citizens they are allowed to enter.

As wealthy celebrities they can afford Business or First tickets so tend to not get bumped from flights.

Both also vaccinated in the UK so feel safe.
