Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I'm having some now and not hating it at all. Has some really nice notes. Not sure though that I want all three of the boxes I jumped in on when I thought it was one of my old faves!
Glass two... still not feeling robbed. I wonder about the psychology of wine tasting and how I would have perceived the taste if it came to me with a 2016 Sig label on it and I got all excited, or if I got it in a blind taste or having not read the ups and downs of AFF Dan Murphy deals forum... Situational bias, the imponderables, the joy of it all. Thanks everyone (and booooo to cynics and the haters!)

Just opened mine. This is honestly the worst wine I had this year. Will call them to return tomorrow.
Could it be corked? In what way is it the worst - lack of body, astringent taste, short unpleasant finish too thin? Ideally would be great to do a Coke vs Pepsi challenge against the labeled bottle blind.

Not jumping to conclusions but the code molded to bottle is same across cleanskin, 15/16 signature and octavius. Of more interest the 5 character code prefix etched AD523 is same on 16 Sig and cleanskin. AD505 on 15 Sig. Date code format differs between sig and cleanskin. Taste test should settle it.

Just opened the bottle I picked up from TWC - seems pretty fine boned although plush with fruit, surprised you don't like the cooler stuff given this seems more elegant than big.
It has been a while since I had it (could not justify paying its asking price till now), perhaps it seemed big then.

Will definitely revisit cooler stuff just to be open minded and mix it up a little.

Just got back home with my loot mix of 2015 and 2016 Eileen Hardys - in each shop they had a "spare" bottle and they offered them to me (grabbed them for a mate who was too slow).

Would anyone know if there are any difference between these two vintages?

My bottle of Signature 2016 has the prefix AD524 stamped on it. I thought I could taste the difference at the start but not towards the end as I ran out of wine. Cork in the signature bottle seems to be marginally longer than the cleanskin, without taking either out of their bottles.

Could the numbers etched on the bottle just denote the bottle, not the wine? I admit I'm way out of knowledge on this bit!

Because I had AD523 on both the cleanskin and labelled bottle followed by the other digits (which in my case run about consecutively) I thought that might denote the wine style/vintage followed by lot/bottle number and date. But if AFAFA has AD524 then maybe they are just consecutive numbers unrelated to the wine type. I couldn’t find any long string on the Octavius at all to compare a different style. Penfolds etches the name eg 2004Grange but not that obvious with Yalumba.

They may indeed be lot numbers, which would fit with same wine having consecutive numbering, rather than serial numbers for a vintage of a particular wine... or they could be something else!

How are you all tasting the wine without taking the corks out of the bottles?

Not the same price in all stores.
Some still have it at $115
Seems like Melbourne still has some catching up to do. A few $100+ wines on clearance with $20 discount which makes them closer to Dan’s every day price, but not much interesting yet.

I'm curious if you've had another one yet. So far I have opened 4: one was good, one obviously corked, and the next two have something wrong - ok with the first sip but a very dry, astringent aftertaste that is not nice. I contacted Rose, she said she sold it all to Dan's a long time ago but said it was a great vintage and well cared for before they sent it. Soft corks, the most expensive grade available apparently. So I'm a bit stumped, feeeling like I need to send the rest back.
Regarding the Rose Kentish “bargain”, I’ve been working through them. One good bottle, 6 bad ones so far. Musty, tannic, opening up after an hour but gone the next day. I don’t think they’ll get any better with age and I think I’ll just put it down to winning some but not them all...

I tried one of the "Signatures" and thought it was good, particularly for the price. Not as big as I expected but it had good fruit. I expected it to be a touch early fro my liking and it was. The tannins will give it a bit of staying power. I think it is the genuine article but they have made sure there aren't any giveaways with the cork etc.

I'll put the other 5 bottles down for a few years and start pulling one out every couple of years.
Having one tonight. Did anyone else feel it tasted pruney? mmm definitely prune. Not enjoyable at all. Sink juice. Gave it a couple hours decant, didn't get at all in my eyes. First GWD purchase for me, may be the last.

I agree BB, simply a wine bottle of a commercial type purchased by the pallet, irrelevant to contents.
Having said that, it's not a commercial proposition to put mediocre wine in expensive bottles unless you have a spare pallet of bot. left over at end of vintage and not using that bottle type next year.

Edit- Also, you might hedge your bets and bottle a sub standard quantity of a mediocre wine hoping it will measure up to the well known commerical brand of similiar origins after some bottle age. Then you would just need to put on the labels.
Wouldn't be surprised if the cleanskin referred to is a batch of slightly inferior Signature that just didn't cut it. (No expert of course)
