Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Bali hotels are suffering.

And struggling in Malaysia.

More Covid effects.TG retiring thei entire A380 fleet.

And taxes go up at LHR with a new Covid tax.

Hotels doing badly in Ireland.

And Manhattan.18 hotels have now closed permanently.

And don't take the free HQ in Thailand if you get there. Not very nice and can get you into trouble.

And don't try and bribe your way into Hawaii.

Hard to believe I was on holiday in New York just 12 months ago with those figures @drron

As for the couple. It's not even that hard to enter Hawaii legally from the continental USA. Their system is pretty good, if you accept living with the virus as the default.

I thought free hotel in thailand was only for nationals. There was a review saying how good Thailand hq is for foreigners last week, becuase its paid and hotels are competing for customers.

Although an American the fellow had lived in Thailand for many years.

You get what you pay for. With an ability to choose your hotel, why would anyone who could afford to travel risk a govt default choice?

Japan has had a huge drop in visitor numbers.

But they still want to go ahead with the Olympics.

Most borders around the world still have restictions.

And the Times Square Edition hotel announced initially with great fanfare by Marriott looks likely to go under.

So Qatar is being added to the UK red list so will disrupt QR and add to the problems of Aussies wanting to come home.

Europe has put out a document discussing travel arrangements such as quarantine and testing. You can access it by clicking on document in this article.

Though there is a booming trade in false vaccine documents.

Damn. Once UK has things as under control as they can be, they will become extremely protective of that, just like we are in Australia.

I think that might be the elephant in the room for the travel industry. I suspect most governments worldwide are looking at vaccines as a measure to return domestic life to normal as a first priority. I wouldn't be surprised to see an initial move towards tightening, not loosening, border restrictions in countries with high vaccination levels.

If QF would reinstate direct flights say once a week that risk could go away. In the time of Covid direct routes are king, of course that would require WA to guarantee to accept the flight.

They more or less are doing this. upping charter flights to DRW, to 20/month, I am sure at least 1-2 a week will be from LHR.

Are the LHR to DRW direct? I thought they had a stopover?

The charter flights are only for repatriation via Howard Springs, there are still many other arrivals on commercial flights into mainland capitals except Melbourne.

Non-stop LHR to DRW

Of course there are many arrivals into other capitals but you had suggested that QF to start up a regular weekly service to PER to bring people from UK, which is happening, but to (the more reliable facility at ) DRW than being at the whim of the WA government into PER. This service is also not taking up existing quarantine places in other capitals.

You know you aren’t alone here.

Yesterday in UK my son and partner travelled to see his partners parents in Kent. Even though they live in the same country she hadn’t seen them in a year as being older they were in full lockdown.

A close colleague of mine who lives maybe 40km from her parents as the crow flies. They are in Malaysia and she is in Singapore and also hasn't seen them for over a year as well. Although I will say there is a degree of risk aversion there (in terms of fear of getting stuck and having to do 2 x quarantine), if it were me I would have found a way. Also have Australian colleagues who haven't seen their parents/extended family in well over 12 months since their last visit to Australia (they hadn't been back for 6 months already when COVID hit) ..... again a high degree of risk aversion , I've been back twice since COVID began. Different folk have different circumstances (financial, work, etc) and different tolerance for risk.

The older I get the riskier I am. Go figure. 😂. Maybe because I have less time I want to make the most of it. Where there’s a will there’s a way. And all that.

there is a strong possibility he will come to Australia in July

That sounds optimistic to me but #1 son also says they intend come home for Xmas .

Imo he is dreaming, our vaccination programme will dawdle along for at least another year at least
Do folks expect the feds to ease ingress without having their constituents protected ?
