Hi All,

I am on the A380 back to LHR tomorrow. Seat Counter is showing the flight as very light. 9's in all categories except First. So my question is this: Given that Business is showing as 9's in both J and D would QF consider a paid upgrade from economy to Business at check in? If so, any idea about how much would be charged? I know the US airlines are alot more flexible about this then QF is but would QF charge me the full freight for a business fare?

As far as i am aware Qantas does not offer paid upgrades at check in.

They do offer points upgrades for their frequent flyers however you can't be in super cheap fare buckets - ie must be in economy (L) or (S) or greater and you must request the upgrade more than 24 hours before the flight leaves its first port.

yes, they will consider it. The cost will be the difference between the economy fare you have paid and the cheapest business class fare available for sale at that time for the flight, plus any change penalty fees associated with your original fare.

With the recent sales some of the cheap fares that were not eligible for upgrades have become eligible. The only example I have is recently looking at SYD-FRA that had a "sale" fare available (no upgrade), the Red-e-deal fare was listed as being eligible for upgrade, whereas normally they aren't. A booked red-e-deal in N or O is eligbile to upgrade in the right circumstances.

'Restricted Fare' means any Qantas fare ticketed in E, N, O, P, Q, U, X or Z booking classes, which includes some Qantas Red e-Deals;
 
I can't understand why the qantas website doesn't show the booking code until after the booking is made.

Most other airline websites manage to do this quite efficiently.

My experience is that international red-e-deals will often book into classes above O or N (recently have had 'V') so are eligible for upgrades. Domestice red-e-deals more typically book into 'O' or 'N' (or 'E' or 'Q')

I guess I was surprised to see a red-e-deal on that route that was upgradable. At non-sale times they are not eligible for upgrade according to the conditions.

Any segment of a booking, whether it be "red e-deal", "Sale" or whatever can be upgradeable as long as is was not booked into a "Restricted fare" class.

Yes, of course. perhaps this is the confusion because with qantas you can't see the fare class until you book, until then you are only guided by the fare description that that appears when you click on the "fare type" that is at the column heading. i.e. "sale" "red e d.." "supersaver".

On the route in question when red-e-deal is in the left column (usually the cheapest fare) the pop-up of condtions has always said (to my recollection) it'll be non-upgradable. Indicating that it will book into a restricted fare class, without mentioning the actual fare class. It was only with this latest sale fare that I noticed that this changed, that the red-e-deals must have been in a non-restricted fare class.

I should have paid better attention before speaking, but I at least feel that my confusion was partially caused by QF conditioning by the use of these abstract fare names instead of proper fare classes.
 
This be true. In reality, one needs to process and absorb at the 'fare' links at the top of the columns if wishing to book an upgradeable segment. The information is available there.
