Melburnians will soon be able to take a break in one of Western Australia’s top travel destinations, with Jetstar announcing it will commence direct flights to the Margaret River region from early next year.

After the original planned launch in March 2020 was postponed due to border closures, the new flights will take off from Melbourne to Busselton from 1 February, providing more than 1,100 weekly seats on the route.

With three return flights per week, the service is expected to bring more than 60,000 visitors to the Margaret River region over the next three years, contributing more than $40 million to the WA economy in that time.

“After a long period of border closures, we’re pleased to confirm the new start date for the route which will offer the only direct flights linking the east coast to the Margaret River region. In recent weeks, we’ve seen firsthand the huge appetite Victorians have for travel after what has been a tough year, and we expect demand for these flights will be strong."

The Ryanair approach?

I guess the reality is it is the closest airport that can handle a 737 and has some facilities. Margaret River has a seal strip, but no idea if it's long enough and I don't think there are any facilities there.

In reality though, most people won't actually stay in the town of Margaret River. Accommodation is spread around the town and many might stay in the Dunsborough region which is a bit closer. Also a car is a must if you want to see things.

Launch postponed again until 26 June 2021:

Yes the 14 day quarantine on entry will kill off any initiative such as this.

There are actions to minimise reasonable risk, and then there are actions that just are killing off many businesses for a level of risk which is extraordinarily low.

Launch has been postponed yet again until 3 July:

Third time lucky?

Launch has now been further postponed to 17 July:

Given we are having what could be called a proper winter over here in the West at the moment, I would be be delaying any thoughts of a trip to MR until much later in the year.

It's been bucketing down...

Good luck with that. My BOM app tells me there is a severe weather warning, a marine wind warning, and a sheep graziers warning for Perth and the South West from about 1400 today, the rain in Fremantle is now quite heavy, and the wind has been getting stonger by the hour. Tell 'em to bring their Wellies...
