Qantas petition to open state borders

Might be worth highlighting in thread title this is about state borders! Not opening international borders.

If they are so concerned about reuniting families, and sustaining jobs... why didn't they consider the emotional strain of refusing refunds, or delaying payment of refunds? Or sacking staff at the height of the pandemic?
If the borders stay closed we will be bailing out QF with taxpayer funds. Or losing the strategic capability which comes from having an Australian flagged airline with significant international lift.

My thinking is still that AJ and Scurrah should ground the lot and force the issue. No freight. No medical isotopes. No state politicians going to state parliaments and most importantly NO FIFO. Let’s see how long it takes before a national state of emergency is declared.

Be that as it may... it’s hard to see this as about the ‘welfare’ of the people, or ‘jobs’. Two things qantas has blatantly disregarded since the commencement of the pandemic :(

Yep. Don’t see why AJ wouldn’t he has form and it worked then.

High risk but if Alan Joyce were to do this, he would definitely want to call the CEOs of Virgin, Rex and Alliance and make a grounding utterly complete and total, no dividing and conquering. The only other questions are what would be the target and what is the agreed endgame ?

Target: Every State with border restrictions, or make an example out of the most restrictive state (either WA QLD or TAS) ? WA would be the biggest and easiest target but if they ground everything in/out and within WA then they would eventually immobilise the resources industry. Once you force one state to capitulate, the rest would have to fall into line. Would want to make sure the Federal Government was forewarned, as action like this would endanger current limited subsidies to keep flying and/or future job keeper and other Fed assistance. State governments are pretty powerless now when it comes to operating an airline, they only have one shot in their locker, and state border closures have already been used, but the federal government also still holds some power in the aviation industry.

Endgame: Would be interesting to ponder what the airlines would want to achieve? A new simple definition of Covid19 hotspots, a seat at some sort of "national kitchen cabinet"? removal of some state border restrictions? I would think that they would want to have an agreed constructive plan or solution (i.e. test regime before flying state borders for example?) before pulling a stunt like that.

Having all freight/mail/politicians/medical staff/all FIFO charters/all industry and royalty streams etc grounded might focus the attention of some states, a week or so would do it, especially the states with large geographic areas and long distances between destinations. 😀

I dunno for sure, but wouldn’t an agreement of that sort contravene ACCC laws? If you can’t price fix, can you organise a total withdrawal of supply?

By the time they get through the ACCC the issue will have been resolved.

Also, the airlines have been given exemption to coordinate routes and scheduling anyway...

It’s the fines you get, even if the matter is resolved.

Airlines may have been given permission to coordinate routes and schedules, but i doubt that includes a cartel to withhold all services.
