Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

.... how ridiculous it is that people testing positive are trusted to self isolate at home - when it seems they can’t be trusted to do so ...
This is the problem. Some will not self-isolate.

Fines/gaol threats are no incentive for some, as they will still do exactly what they want. We will all be paying the price.

I find the statistics for the returning overseas travellers to be irrelevant, as long as they are quarantined on return. I actually find these statistics to be confusing when added into State’s figures as they have no bearing on how each State is going.

NSW only deployed NSW Health at Sydney Central Station this morning as the Vic postcode lockdown only started at midnight. Their deployment was not advertised in advance. I expect the simpler explanation is that the person concerned didn't expect to get caught.

Most people in our society are law-abiding but there is a small element that couldn't care less. Apparently that is why we need prisons.
But still why bother to get the test? I think there needed to have been much more 'surprises' used in checking

There is so much agreement on that. It doesn't add to the overall tally but does add to active cases. On the other hand, if Victoria is anything to go by from the Woolworths issue in NSW, they release them anyway when positive.

Agree.

The are many people genuinely suffering terrible hardship and economic circumstances (not just because of covid) but many seem to manage their lives one way or another without coming a cropper with the law.

Just have to watch a few of the "RBT" programs, the majority of those caught with drugs and/or alcohol and/or speeding are not first offenders, don't have a licence (or suspended), driving an unlicensed vehicle and then plead for leniency because they depend on their licence (which they don't actually have) to maintain their job/look after their kids or whatever. They can't afford to register their vehicles but always seem to have money for booze and cigarettes and/or drugs and often "just popping down to the"... Pizza shop for a takeaway...bottle-o for a few more bottles..etc.

Most people seem to manage their lives & budget and stay out of police focus, some seem incapable or don't care.

The ones that make me shake my head are the ones that think life is unfair to them because they keep getting arrested and fined

It doesn’t help that unsocial media says things like, it’s 5G/it’s a government plot to control us/we always get the flu anyway and that’s all it is’. Some people obviously get most of their news like that, and they still vote.

I am convinced there is absolutely no hope of containing this virus relying on common sense and expectation people will do the right thing.

I’ve just boarded a “Vline replacement coach” at Footscray station. Not far from the hotspots, although not a hotspot itself. There are 4 people on this 52 seat coach. So I’m on one side of the bus, 5 rows behind Person 1 and there’s another person 3 rows behind me. Person 4 boards, and whilst on the opposite side of the bus, occupies an aisle seat in the exact same row as person 1. She could have taken any one of the other seats and spaced a bit better but no - sits within about 1.5m from one of the other 3 people on the bus.

We all have no hope. Messages are not getting through.

I suspect that’s why we were not going for eradication. Too many dills in the country / world.

According to AFR, in addition to the woman who travelled to Sydney by train while awaiting her results, another 5 were stopped at Sydney Airport because they lived in Melbourne hotspots....

This is getting ridiculous.
There needs to be consequences. There just haven't been, so of course if you are of that kind of mindset you would do what you wanted. Interesting that Melbourne seems to have flushed this behaviour out more than other states. WA chucked someone in jail and that was widely publicised. I just hope the genie isn't out of the bottle. At least we have Federal leaders who aren't of the Trump ilk and they acknowledge the issue.

According to Sydney ABC 7pm news tonight the train traveller is now in self-isolation which of course means whatever she thinks it means.

Refusal of random breath tests carries fines in all states & territories in Australia, some with possibility of jail. Does the same apply for refusal of virus testing? Have the Victorians at least contemplated it? (I know its a police / non police situation, but a law could be framed accordingly.)
