Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Isn’t that what they called a “brave decision,” in Yes Minister? The virus does not seem to be abating across a lot of America.

It does seem a bit unfair. Happy to sit at home in the luxury afforded by isolation, but the first in line for a fun overseas trip for 'business'? Bit of a tough sell for the hard working nurses, fire fighters, paramedics, teachers, bus and train drivers...

Who knows what sort of "business traveller" is being referred to? It's a pretty wide, encompassing term. There are an infinite sort of business travels, some reasons could be considered trivial, whilst others could be important for a range of reason. In my experience, though, the vast majority of business travel I've been on could not be characterised as "fun" . If "fun overseas trip" is what most business travel is all about, maybe I've been in the wrong type of jobs for way too long! 🤣

It seems that the government will make 2 channels of exemptions to the travel ban, according to the Australian reported yesterday:

1. Business Travellers/International Students who will carry 'international benefit'
2. Countries who are trusted and COVID safe for eg. NZ.

So I really hope that as interstate borders open, we will start to see Australia is including more countries to enter into our travel bubble.
 
Interestingly, Singapore have just announced that citizens and permanent residents arriving back into Singapore who had spent the previous 14 days in a select group of countries* can serve out their 14 day “stay at home notice” (SHN) at their own homes instead of at a dedicated facility (hotel). All returnees will also be tested, at their own expense, towards the end of the 14 day SHN period.

Could be a good model for Australia to follow.

Personally, we stand to save $2k each - the cost of a room at a dedicated facility for 14 days (as a same sex couple probably would have to stay in separate rooms).

* these include Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, China, NZ, Taiwan, South Korea and Vietnam.

From what I understand, there are already business travellers heading O/S. One of the criteria for exemption is:

your travel is essential for the conduct of critical industries and business (including export and import industries)

I've heard suggestions that what's considered "critical" is apparently less strict than a month and a half ago. I know of several who have been approved on condition that they fund their two week quarantine on return. One person I know is currently quarantining at their destination, they then have three days of business meetings followed by two more weeks of quarantine upon return to Australia. Not my idea of a 'fun' business trip.
