Having sat in row 1 on a 737 once, I never chose it again because I found it cramped. Also 6'.

At least the ones with IFE are extra legroom. I'm 6'3 and could barely reach the bulkhead with my legs.

Data point for SYD-AKL B738 service: as a Plat row 4 seats (Economy Plus - Front) were blocked until T-80, whereupon they became selectable for AUD68.

All other seats from row 5 and back selectable for free from time of booking.

Another data point - Seat 24J on the 333 is listed as a forward seat and has opened up for me (as a gold) but when I select it, it wants me to pay $72 - a strange amount given that this is a SYD-HND flight and economy plus seats cost $163 and normal seat selection including forward seats should be free.

24J is a “Forward - Front,” seat and is therefore not included in the free selection for gold, or WP for that matter.

It's listed as 'forward' in their seat maps and seat selection, so if they have a different classification for it then it's not reflected during seat selection.
Whereas 23AB is listed as 'economy plus- front' and is available for selection at $190.

Yep my bad. Was looking at the old seat map when it was a forward front seat. Perhaps they haven’t updated it to reflect the new classification and the system still thinks you need to pay for it?

Yes that seems to be the pattern.

Row 4 is payable for WP until t-24 when it becomes blocked. Then at some point it becomes available.
